I have a 400 and the torque went out. got it splited by the engine, and now time for the rearend. there are about eight bolts on the ouside, and one on the inside on the bottom. there is a very thick sheild you have to take off to take this last bolt out to split it. I have all the bolts out and won't come off. Is the seasonal disconnect lever on the bottom connected or will it just come off and out of its slot? theres a inch and 5/16 nut on the seasonal disconnect, but our wrences won't fit it. ours are too wide. maybee we don't have to take it off? I have no idea, never split a 400. split my H three times and know it bolt by bolt in my mind!

Lay a hydralic jack horrizontal on top of the TA housing and jack between the transmission housing at the rear and the top back side of the bell housing in front and the gasket will break loose.

Would someone please explain to me why you need to split the clutch housing from the trans? When I rebuilt the torque in my 300 I just split from the engine. Did I miss something important when I did mine? It's been over 10 years ago now and it still works better than when I bought the tractor 18 years ago.

I don't know if the 400 is same as 300 in this regard. If a 300 if equiped with a side belt pully, the pully gear box must be removed. There is a flange on torque tube and front of pully gear box kind of curls down a bit, thus not allowing the torque tube to move straight foreward until shafts have separated.

I'm not familiar, but if it is the gasket holding the case tofether, use a wide wood chisel between the parts and work around the gasket. It's also possible it could have a lot of pressure on it from being loose, and might need weight shifted, too.

Most likly the gasket if it have been a long time that gasket can be very hard to get to let go.
