I've just put the felt seal (rear main crank seal)into the tractor and have a couple of questions. First, Was I suppose to trim the seal ? I got it all in eventually, but I was just wondering if I was suppose to put it in so it fit then trim the extra. Now, after I have the plate back on, I can't even turn the crank. I'm wondering if it will losen when the engine starts ? Just to qualify this, I don't have the pulley or fly wheel on yet to get any leverage. Also, the bearings have pre-lube on them and in this cold weather are also very stiff.

Any thoughts would be helpful.

Brian.

BRIAN I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM ON A 130 FARMALL.
I HAD A SLIGHT CLEARENCE PROBLEM ON THE CENTER MAIN BEARING.I TOOK THE ENGINE TO MY LOCAL NAPA
MACHINE SHOP TO CORRECT THE PROBLEM.I HAVE NOT A CLUE IS TO WHAT THEY DID BUT IT FIXED IT.
GOT IT HOME AN INSTALLED THE REAR SEAL HAD THE PROBLEM OF NOT BEING TO TURN THE ENGINE WITH THE HAND CRANK.I WENT AHEAD ANYWAY AND INSTALLED THE ENGINE BACK ON THE TRACTOR, AND ROCKED IT BACK AND FORTH IN GEAR UNTIL THE ENGINE MOVED.I THEN USED THE STARTER TO CRANK THE ENGINE AND IT WAS JUST FINE AFTERWARDS.RUNS JUST FINE.

You shouldn't have to trim the felt seal. If you didn't put any oil on the seal when you put it together you might squirt a little oil in the area of the seal. I like to oil the seal before I assemble the covers together.

Thanks for the response, I did soak the seal with oil before installing. I also checked the clearences with the plasti gauge. What I will do is get the block up to room temp and turn with a wrench.

Thanks
Brian.

Did you check your connecting rod and main bearings with plastigauge ? you should be able to turn the crank with a wrench, if you dident check the bearings and you cannot turn the crank it sounds like you have a bearing clearance issue.
good luck
