Has anyone converted an H from 6v. to 12v. with an alternator. I need to know where you can buy the alternator and resister and whatever else you know to convert it. Any help would be appreciated.

Ben,
If your battery, cables and starter are good, be sure all connections are clean and bright. That includes the starter and bellhousing where the starter gets it's ground. If all that is good, check the ring gear on the flywheel for burrs and such that could cause a jam. If all this checks out, you can use a long ground cable and connect it to a bolt holding the starter in. One other possibility is the starter switch. If the contacts are burned or pitted, replace or repair it.

Good luck,
Phil

I would get the starter checked and correct cables first. Just finished getting starter re-soldered because of 12v conversion. Remember when these were new 6v did the trick and will still do it if in shape.

My H will crank for like it has good power for about 1/2 to 3/4 of a revolution and stop. It has a new 8volt battery new cables, had the starter checked out and was ok. Bad ground or loose cable? Haven't been tinkering much due to the bone chilling temps here in michigan. any help is appreciated. thanks

I converted my H about a year ago, I used a Nippon Denso alternator. It was pretty straight forward and there's no hood clearance problems. Try searching the archives. I did tell indepth what it took.
I used to have a link to the discussion but it disappeared due to a virus.

If you insist on doing it, I think there are smaller alternators for some of the Japanese cars that leave more room than the Delco type alternators.

Compare the cost of the resistor to a new coil. I just replaced the coil with one that has an internal resistor.

As others said, fitting the alternator inside the hood is possible but you have very little room for adjustment.

Before converting, try replacing the wiring, especially the battery and starter cables. Those cause a lot of hard starting problems.

I used a 12-volt one-wire alternator and resistor from NAPA. The alternator only cost about $32 and seems to work fine (electrically), but it is too big for the hood to fit correctly. I built a bracket that holds the alternator right against the engine, but it still interferes with the hood.

Use a Delco one wire alternator, I've fitted one in, but there is virtually no room to close the hood, I had to use the shortest belt that would fit, then assemble with the belt on. Why do you want to convert to twelve? A 6 volt system works great if you use the proper size cables and all your connections aren't rusted or corroded
