What do you think. Few weeks back 140 would'nt start start. Would make clicking noise really just short click then nothing. Thought maybe starter. Tapped it a little still nothing. When turn switch ameter gauge would not register. Terminal was'nt that corroded but took cables off and cleaned. When Replaced tractor fired right up. Went out yesterday same problem click then nothing. Could wiggle cable some and could get click but that's it. Gonna try to figure out this weekend. Any ideas? Thanks

Avery, we had a Dodge truck in the shop last week, the owner said it wouldn't turn over. We charged the battery and did a load test=battery OK. Then we teched out the starter solenoid and finally pulled the starter. When we bench tested the starter it just about jumped off the bench.....one damned $12 cable and it was fixed, after we spent over an hour..and I wouldn't have thought cable when we started diagnosing...so for the few bucks cables are worth do what Hugh said put new ones on and replace them again in a few years...Mike in Exeter Ontario

If all else fails , check the post where the cable connects to the starter. Sometimes you can get what I call a cold joint inside the starter where the post connects to the field windings of the starter . 2 weeks ago when you took the cables off to clean them you twisted the post just enough to make it work for a while .To fix, take the starter off and take it to any electric motor shop and get them to re solder it with silver solder to stand the heat. It may look like you have a good conection . It might be breaking down under the load of turning the engine Hope this helps

Cables? I throw them away about every 5 years, and install new ones. Many good batteries have been ruined by poor cables. I had a 6 cylinder diesel starting every day unassisted with 6 year old batteries, temps were dropping to the minus side F every night. Right now I have a 10 year old battery in my Super A, cables are about 3 years old.

I agree - suspect a failing battery cable. Often the cable's conductor will corrode in the area near the terminal, but the cable insulation hides the corrosion so the cable looks like it's still good. Use a jumper cable to bypass each cable one at a time - you'll quickly find out if/where there's a bad one!

I'd try the cables first. Had cables go bad without any indication except like you describe. By-pass the cables with jumper cables (batt posts to ground and starter lug). If prob goes away figure out which cable and replace.
