i just recently put new rings in farmall f-20. i never took the oil pump off, just the oil pan. do i need to prime the oil pump?? if so how?..I also have one connecting rod bearing that is to tight. IS there a certain direction that the bearings go inside the cap?? i dropped on out on the carpet below and just stuck it back in. I havent got the oil pan on yet so.... ALso are the shims the exact same size on both sides of the caps? answer what ever you can. it will be greatly appreciated!

Ben, the lower bearing insert has a hole in it and an oil transfer groove. The shims fit up against the edge of the bearing insert to keep it in place and tight. I don't think they have a front or back, just a top and bottom. The shims keep them from spinning. I try to keep the heavy steel shims on the outside (against the bearing shell) and put the thin shims in between the two heavy ones.

Get a micrometer to check shims, you will want the same amount on each side. Also, get some plastigauge to check clearances. My book calls for .0025-.003". I don't think the shells are different, but I would check the wear marks to make sure they go in right. Also put some kind of lube on the journals so it doesn't start off dry. The oil pump is submerged in oil.

I don't think you need to prime pump. Just prelube engine parts when you put it together, make sure you have proper amount of oil in it before starting, and make sure you have oil pressure immediately following initial start up. May consider priming the pump if it is a new pump. Do a plastiguage check on the bearings if you think they are to tight. That will tell you if they have the proper clearance. Ussually bearings will only go one way. Ussually they have a ridge on the backside of bearing that fits into a slot on the rod/rod cap. Not sure if the F-20 has this, but the main thing is that the bearing is unable to spin. F-20's had shimes on the rod caps. These were to allow for adjustments for bearing clearance (could be taken out or added). I would double check on that bearing to see if it is in correctly, might be the reason that it is to tight. Also, without doing a plastiguage check you most certainly would want to put those rod cap shimes in exactly the way they was (presuming you are using the old bearings). Plastiguage check would be a good idea, but would be a must if you are putting in new bearings. I hope this clears things up for you a little. Sorry about not remembering exactly how the bearing can go, I should know but it has been years since I had my rod caps off of my 20. Also, one more thing. Those rod caps are dippers, so make sure it gets put on the right way. If opposite of the right way the rod bearing won't get any oil.

thanx alot for the siggestions.
yes i have used that plastigauge before on our allis G.... Ill try that on the f-20.. I didnt figure the pump had to be primed either being as it would be just like draning the oil if i just took the pan off ans never touched the pump.. ill try it, see what happens. Any more suggestions please let me know..thanx
