I know with the whole country freezing it is hard to think too much about grass cutting, but spring will be here directly.

I got a Cub 184 Loboy last year thinking it would be just right for the job. Now maybe it is just cause I want a different tractor, but I am dissatisfied with the 184 for several reasons.

First is the lack of power and utility. No 3 point hitch and too small to really do much with even if I added the hitch.

Second is the rigid belly mounted mower. IH really didn't design the mower to "float" over the ground. If you hit a bump or mow on a hill, the whole 5 foot mower tilts and you get an uneven cut.

On the positive side, it is very maneuverable and I have lots of obstacles to include some relatively steep areas. The loBoy remains stable and easy to control.

So my parameters are:
1. More power.
2. More utility (3 point and ability to mount a loader)
3. Capable of running a 5 foot finish mower off the 3 point and doing a nice neat mowing job.
4. Easlily maneuverable in tight spaces.
5. Low and stable.
6. The ground can get soft, so good floatation is a plus.

OK guys...What are your recomendations?

One thing every body is over looking when recomending the super C,Aint nothing about that tractor low.I rode a C for many years cltivating ,mowing with a sickle bar mower, and rakeing hay ,love those tractors but as far as getting around a yard it's just to big..I would have to save my money and get somthing with hydrostat trans, a cup holder, and a 72 in deck.

Sounds to me like you need a second tractor. With that 184 you probably do little or no hand or push mowing. In looking at every aspect of what you said, I would have to say get a second tractor. I too was tempted to say get a new Kubota or Yanmar, but that is not the economical answer. If I were you I would keep the 184 and add a 30-40 hp utility tractor with loader, rear scraper blade or box scraper.

I don't think the C or SC is the answer on loader work. The Farmall (any size) probably the greatest field work tractor ever built, bar none, is not a good loader tractor. In fact people wanting to install loaders is one of the major factors that took away the good field work features of the Farmall.

Another item I would seriuosly look at is a skidsteer loader. You would soon find that all those places where the 184 cuts uneven would be smoothed out. Never underestimate the ability of a skidsteer. I once put 72 truckloads of fill in a cemetary in 6 hours with a Case 1737 uniloader. The community wanted to build up a low area without removing stones. If my goals were mowing and landscape improvments, skidloader and small mower tractor way to go. I think just about everyone that has gone to the larger mower tractor find them selves doing a lot of hand mowing.

Have you considered a nice Trailmower by Swisher, Agrifab, Sears, or Polaris to suppliment the Lowboy?

BB,I use an Allis Agco 2025 (25hp 60in deck) for mowing and the Super C for the brush hog. The C is just to hard on the yard. Those lug tires cut in if the lawn is a little wet. I mow about 5 acres. kjm

Just out of curiosity, there seems to be a BIG Super C following. I like them, but don't see them as really a utility type. Maybe it is the part of the country I live in. The Super Cs usually go for less than a Super A and are a bargain compared to ther models I see for sale right not (IH 424, IH 444, Ford 650, David Brown 3800). Maybe the SC is the way to go.

Unless you want to stay with vintage IH ,I think you would be better served by one of the Japanese tractors. No I'm not a traitor but most have power steering, diesel engine,3 pt. hitch .and pack a lot of power into a compact frame. They also kinda cheap to buy .You can't get a Cub Cadet for as little as anice 25HP kubota or Yanmar . Most of the name brand small stuff is made in Japan anyway and painted the corporate colors.

I agree that one of the small Japanese-built machines will work better for you, but I think you ought to reconsider the 3-pt finishing mower if you have many obstacles to mow around. A finishing mower is fine for big, open areas, but miserable when mowing around trees - been there, done that. I have come to the conclusion that the ideal mower for a large lawn is a commercial ZTR mower. It won't do the other things you want, but it sure is fast and easy. I have a Scag Tiger ZTR for the lawn and old tractors for all the other jobs.

I've got just the thing for you. I have a SC with 3 point, 6 ft. blade, and a 6ft. finish mower. But the mower is better suited for a ford or a utility tractor. e-mail if interested

Thanks

P.S. I have another SC that I plan to use on a 4acre yard.

I am a believer in, if you are going to build a shed/garage, build it bigger than you want. It fills up fast. My opinion is likewise when it comes to tractors. A guy should consider getting that next sized bigger when getting a tractor. Will come in handy if you decide to do that bigger job or if nothing else you will have more power instead of adequate power or less power than you need. Lot of areas for you to look at if getting another tractor. My personal opinion is for you to look around, look at different tractors, and see what you think. Your personal preferance is probably worth more than my opinion on what tractor you should have. Example- I might tell you to get a 8n or 9n ford and you might want to stay with international. Or I might tell you to get a 300 utility and you might not want to go that big.
