I'm converting a Farmall 400 gas to twelve volt, and a question came to mind. If you have a single wire alternator that runs from the battery, to the amp guage, than to the alternator, and you have to charge the battery, will it hurt the alternator? Basicaly if there is a charge going to the alternator, will it damage it? It's a $58 Delco-Remy

Alternators have diodes. The diodes serve two purposes: Convert AC to DC by cutting off one side of the sine wave, and also have the effect of a one way valve, like the cutout on an early 3 brush generator. So when the alternator is turning, it produces power (as long as there is power at the terminal to excite the field) and stops producing and prevents backflow when stopped. The only danger to the alternator is if you try to charge or jump start with the cables reversed. Always look first to see that the negative goes to negative,a nd the positive to positive.

Also dangerous to unhook the system with it running. Don't test alts. by taking a battery cable off, SPIKE.

Bryce it should not hurt the alternator so long as you have everything connected properly.

Bryce - Using a battery charger won't hurt a single wire alternator! The BAT terminal on any alternator (single wire or otherwise) sees battery voltage constantly - even when the motor is shut off. As long you hook it up correctly, using a charger cannot damage the alternator.
