Shifting Problem

I have an old "H" and the transmission shows all is well and gears should be lined up and in neutral. However, when you let the clutch out it acts as if it is still in gear and kills the engine.Have pulled the shifter off and can see that it should be in neutral. Tractor would start with clutch out prior to this happening but now only starts with clutch engaged. What is odd is with the clutch disengaged the rear wheels will still turn as we had to pull it out of the pasture. Seems if the transmission was still stuck in gear or something has broke not allowing it to disengage the wheels should be locked up as well and not turn unless the clutch was engaged. Any thoughts would be helpful as I am not a tractor expert. I do have a manual and it seem as the inner workings are pretty simple but don't know where to start. Thanks to anyone who might be able to help. Would gladly appreciate any help on here on in e-mail. Thanks again.

My M did something similar to what you describe and turns out the pilot bearing on the main transmission shaft was out. Might be able to tell by removing belt pulley and checking.

You might check the clutch disk. It might be worn down far enough it wont release the transmission. My H was doing something similar to yours and that is what I found. My clutch disk was wore down to the rivets.

I was going to say ice in the rearend, but since you say the wheels turn that probably isn't it. However, pull the front drain plug on the tranny and see if oil comes out.

To get a little bit of a peek inside without removing the whole tranny cover, remove the belt pulley drive (or cover if you don't have a pulley).

Does the 'H' have a full trans cover like the -4's? If so, being me I would jump right in and pull the cover to see what I could see. Sounds like a shift fork might have broken or similar. Dave
