Well let me first start out saying that I Was, and that's a was, having a great day until I looked down at the 2 bolts that hold on the oil pump today. It was then that I realized that in the excitement of having friends over to help me put the motor back on the tractor I had forgot to bend to metal over the bolts to keep them from backing off. So... off the engine must come again, oh well, I do enjoy working on my tractor.

But anyway....
while figuring out where all the parts go, I noticed something odd on my governer gear, there are two sets of "two punch marks" 180 degrees from each other. One set is 2 marks inline towards the center, these are right below the "low point" of the tooth. The other marks are beside each other with a single tooth between them. I would have to say that the later marks which I described don't look as "factory" as the other two, but I thought I would ask.

Whoa, there! Don't be working TOO hard. If you've already got the crankcase bolted back onto the torque tube, you should be able to install the oil pump by just removing the pan. AS for the governor timing, look at your cam gear. I can't quite remember which side is which, but if the marks on the cam gear are under the groove, then it will be the mark on the governor gear that is in line with the tooth. Or . . . just the opposite, if the marks on the cam gear are centered on a tooth, then the marks on the governor gear that center on a groove are the correct ones. It's the marks that must line up, and they will only line up when the tooth on one side is in the groove on the other. Does that make sense? (reading back over, I'm not sure I've really cast any light, here, but I hope it helps!) Scotty

I should add that there are corresponding marks on the the camshaft gear that drives the governor gear, as well as on the crankshaft gear that droves the camshaft gear (I think only one punch on those). Make sure these punch marks all line up together: two punches to two (governor to cam), one punch to one on the other gear (cam to crank).

The 'factory' marks are timing marks. If the timing gear cover is still off, you should be able to bar the engine over to make sure the cam shaft is timed to the crankshaft and the governor/distributor/magneto shaft is timed to the camshaft.

It is possible that whoever took it apart the last time around had the engine barred over so that while nr. 1 cylinder was at top dead center, they had it TDC on the intake stroke, not the power stroke. Rather than put it all together to simply turn the engine a half-turn, they just added new marks 180 degrees out from the old to simplify re-assembly.

No guarantee that is what they are, just my guess as to why you have two sets of timing marks.

On the oil pump, you shold be able to remove those bolts one at a time to put the metal lock strip back on there. From your post is sounds like you are going to pull the whole engine off the tractor. You should be able to install that strip without even having to drop the pan.
