Having never seen, much less used or driven an International/Farmall with a torque amplifier, what does it mean if the TA is bad? Is the tractor unusable?
Thanks,
Bill

Torque not that bad to fix. I repaired one in a Super MTA last year. replaced clutch disc rollers and springs, gaskets, Had less than $300 in the job. I thought it be alot more. Could buy whole torque just to to put it in and go for around $600. Don

I am in a simmilar boat as you. Last fall at a neighbor's auction I bought his farmall 400. I have been warped into pulling from a friend and couldn't pass this tractor. Every thing here is green, grandpa shakes his head seeing a red tractor on a green farm and doesn't understand why the kids go pullin. My brother works at the dealer in town as a mechanic. I work on diesel trucks. My tractor is going to be torn down in my shop at home. I've done research and have found that the parts for the ta are cheap. So I wish you luck and hope your mechanical skills are good because it looks to be a project that requires more ambition to start than complete. If your in my neighborhood, maybe we can help.

"Bad TA" can mean a couple things. If just the low side is out, the tractor will still run and can be used normally in direct (high) range. It just won't go if you shift the TA into low. This seems to be the more frequent failure mode. However if the TA has failed completely (both low and direct are out) you are dead in the water!

If your question is what does the abbreviation TA mean I've been assuming it means transmission.

"Torque Amplifier". Gives a lower speed and more power in each gear when engaged. Made the old 5 speed trans into a 10 speed. Can be shifted on the fly as opposed to the 2 range transmission on some tractors.

I beg to differ. A hundred bucks for gaskets and rollers, etc, to do it yourself. This is all you need in order to overhaul the roller clutch, which is what goes bad 99% of the time. It really isn't a very bad job either. Whatever you do, don't pay someone else to do it, it'll break your wallet.

Something else that I just learned is that you can open an entire thread at once by clicking on the blue (+) sign. Till then I'd be clicking back and forth thinking "there must be a better way", there was!

Yeah. Now if they would just all open at once in an order that would make it easy to see the order in which they came . Instead of top to bottom being reverse except for the replies to replies. Sort of.
Also the numbers next to the names will tell the IP address and will be the same each time a person posts, except when the person has a non-static address. Like yours. Do you have a satellite connection?

Bad T/A will cost you $400 to $600 rebuilt for a Farmall 300, 350, 400, 450... Or if you know a guy who rebuilds the old ones you can get a price like $175.
