1949 "H" Farmall. Changing Hyd seal at transmission. I have taken the 3 bolts from the housing at the transmission. It will turn as if it will screw off the shaft, but the end of the shaft is too large for it to pass off the end. Does the shaft screw out? How do I get this off?

Any help appreciated.

Bob and Bob, thanks for your help. I thought the shaft would probably screw off, but I was afraid to start applying much pressure with wrenches, etc. until I know what I am doing.

Thanks again.

You need to remove the coupling that sticks out of the transmission to the front. It unscrews like a regular right handed nut.

That slotted piece (pump shaft coupler) is screwed onto the end of the hyd shaft. After you remove the coupler, the seal retainer will slide right off. To remove the coupler, grab it with a large pipe wrench and unscrew it off (it's a standard right hand thread). Once it breaks free the coupler usually will spin off easily by hand.

To hold the pump shaft stationary, put the tranny in 5th gear and block the wheels, or engage the PTO then hold the PTO shaft from turning with another large pipe wrench. Or (my favorite...) is to remove the gear shift lever and use a BF screwdriver to work the shift rails to engage two gears (like R and 2) at once. This locks the tranny up tighter than a banker's heart! Just don't forget to set all the shift rails back to neutral (center) before replacing the shift lever...
