After all the hubbub on this forum last week about Roger's books, I bought one. I was at my supplier for model A Ford parts, and in his books section was the Old Tractors book, so I got it. It is well written, especially for a professor. I dont know about out west, but here in new england, the professors tend to be pretty stuffy. He talks like a regular guy, and I am enjoying the book so far.

I have every book ol' rog has written about tractors. Laugh continuously when reading them. I can see myself in several of Rogers stories. This man has been there not just somebody trying to write a book about tractors. Will order his next book as soon as he comes out with another. Too bad Roger is stuck on A-C's. I bet when he cuts himself though he bleeds RED!

What A Dumb Series Of Books

While thankfully I missed all the "hubbub" about "Rogers books", I was somewhat less thankful not to be spared one of his books for a Christmas present, something to the effect of "Love, $ex and old Tractors" or something like that designed to be deceitfully titallating by a family member who knew I had an interest in old tractors and mistakenly thought such a book would either prove helpful or amusing.
I won't take the time to fall all over myself to pretend they were well written or insightful. Anyone who finds them to be such, is stretching an interest in tractors and politely trying to marry it with a "grasping at straws" approach to humor. I certainly would not recommend them to anyone who is a serious tractor enthusiast...and even less so to anyone with a sense of humor.
In place of any useful information, tips or insights, the book was chock full of fluff, foam and strained advice on how to organize your shop, politically correct rehashes on how to dispose of chemicals and gradeschool humor on various misadventures that anyone who owns a lawnmower became familiar with by the second year of ownership. I was soon wearied to the point of tears by his high adventures in tearing into his beloved Allis Chalmers brake shoes...Lord help anyone who needs any real advice on say for example, body work, such essential advice to a serious restoration was sadly lacking. Many are the readers who are going to come up sadly disappointed.
To my regret I struggled through the book in its entirety, but in the end was able to take a measure of comfort by relegating it to the trash bin where it so richly deserves to be ensconced.
At least I can take some comfort in the fact that the book was a gift as opposed to having bought it on my own. It is a mistake that I certainly won't repeat at my own expense.
Welshes books are a classic case of "The Emporers New Clothes" in which nothing was delivered but everyone is too embarrassed to admit they've been had and takes the position that the book was very "funny" and "well written" just because it dealt with the subject of old tractors.

Well, sure I feel sorry for ole Roger, but, it ain't because he likes orange paint. I was born at Meadow Grove, Nebraska, then, we moved a little further south to Princeton, Mo. That still wasn't warm enough. I've been in Mississippi for the past 45 years and now, somebody (itmay have been Roger) left that blamed barb wire fence down again and it's cold here, too. I think it's 30 degrees tonight. I enjoy visiting Nebraska in the summer.

I found out you can order directly from Mr. Welsch and if you tell him (it is ok to lie!) that you feel sorry for him he just might be willing to autograph the book for you!

I had never heard of him until a couple of Christmas ago my mother-in-law gave me the book "Old Tractors and the Men Who Love Them". I thought that it was VERY clever and I thouroughly enjoyed reading it. I could really relate to many of the ridiculous situations that he described.

I have all of his books, and annoy my wife at night by laughing out loud at some of the things he is writing about. He hits real close to home on a lot of topics! Have fun reading his books, in my opinion they are all good clean fun books.

I read Rog's books at school, and all of my friends hear me laugh, read what I'm laughing at, and then say "I don't get it." He really hits home, topics only we understand amongst ourselves. My fav is still Old Tractors and the Men who Love them. Thanks for all you do, Roger.

Y'know, you'd think a history professor would understand about being doomed to repeat things. You'd think he'd pick something besides a WC. Hey, Rog, I got this cherry Farmall A just waitin' for you to bust a knuckle on it. ;o)
