I'm going to look at a 1960 HI 275 for sale. Now I know diesels are smoky to a certain extent, but is there a good way to tell a good engine when you don't have tools handy.

The guy says it smokes to start then settles to
normal operation. The rest of the tractor sounds like what I need.

Bluelight, I have a B250 which is the little brother of yours. When I bought it it hadn't run in 8 years..it smoked at start up and seemed to smoke a lot even after it had been running.Well I kept putting injector cleaner in it with every tankfull and I put a new thermostat in it, changed filters, pulled the pan and cleaned it etc... the usuall maintenance..and the more I use it the better it is working..it isn't smoking after it is warmed up..I believe it was simply dirty injectors and as I use it and put injector cleaner in it it just gets better, starts better and runs wide open better..so ..not saying it couldn't be burning some oil, but if it is warmed up good and at half throttle or more you don't see a lot of smoke I'd jump in...I saw a B250 in good condition advertised in the Western Ontario Farmer and the guy wanted $4900..it had a loader too...good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

They are not to bad of and engine but they did have some problems , the smoking thing could be a lot of things and with out seeing it myself it is had to say , It could be leaking injectors or i should say slobbering injectors , low comp. low fuel pressure from the pump. , week glow plugs of a couple that are not working . Also you will want to run it for a while and check for comp. in the rad as they have been knowen to crack heads .

They are a pretty good little tractor if you maintainthe glow plug system. If not, they just about AIN"T gonna start below 50 deg or so. Maybe not even that low.
