You reckon I made a mistake? Was at auction Sat. JD 2440 bid off at 4000 dollars plus 10% auction commission. Tractor was kinda rough shape body wise. Rust on hood fibeglass hood had some dings in it etc. Tractor cranked good and seemed to run alright. Live pto worked, brakes held ok. I did'nt see any major leaks anywhere to speak of. Bottom of left front axle near tire was cracked but no significant damage. Looked, like tractor had hit something and piece had just broken off. Did'nt appear to effect steering any and power steering seemed alright too. However, upon closer inspection the forward reverse gearshift on the left side could be pulled completely out with your hand. Course you could also put it right back in. Someone had slid foam rubber cover down over gear shift lever which looked to me like were trying to hide it.Know this not good, But would this be indicative of major problem. My guess is tractor was probably used by landscaper or state in some capacity. Also at back end, not the transmission plug which you add transmission gear oil but one higher which you screwed off with your hand. That reservoir did not have any fluid in it. Not sure what it was for? Hydraulic remotes maybe. Would any of you been scared of this machine or you reckon I ought to have gone 4100. Auctioneer sure gave me the chance. Most of my experience is with Ford 3000 and 140 Int. Don't know whole lot about John Deere and only a novice mechanic on a good day. Based on what I said and holding you fellows to nothing . Reckon, I made right call? Close inspection liable to have revealed lot more wrong? Course won't nothing covered by pretty coat of paint... Thanks

We used to have a 2440 that we planted corn with and did other odd jobs. The shifters were a weak point on these tractors, bad about getting hung in 2 gears at once. The threaded cap you spoke of is where the Hy-guard oil is put in for the trans-hyd system. There is a dip-stick down beside the right foot board where this is checked. Deere came out with a different shifter for the left lever, but they still gave some trouble.

The green paint would have scared me off to begin with, and after reading through your list of problems the auctioneer would have had to pay ME to take it home.

Probably get more feedback posting this in JD site. I sure would not have gone $4100 with that many obvious problems!!

One thing to do to relieve your anxiety over this is to tell yourself that even if you did go $4100 the other guy probably would have gone even higher.
