International 340 Utility Questions

Looking at buying an IH 340 Utility. Has a loader that looks aftermarket and an shop built 3 point. Has power steering that needs work. This tractor was used by the county for some reason. It is painted yellow over the red paint. Tractor seems to be in decent shape otherwise.

Questions are:

1) How much does this tractor weight with or without a loader? I need this for hauling purposes.

2) This tractor does not have a PTO. Has a blockoff plate on the rear. How much money and trouble is it to convert one to a PTO. Is a live PTO possible? What would that take?

Thanks in advance!!

Brian, I believe I'm correct in my understanding that the 340 Utility was basically the same tractor as the 300U/350U, except that they put a smaller engine in it for some reason that's really unclear to me (engine sizes were mostly getting bigger, not smaller, at that point in time).

The other posts on weight and hydraulic capacity agree with what I think I know. This family of tractors had both live-PTO and the older transmission-driven PTO available as options. Trying to put a PTO on the tractor you're looking at is probably prohibitive because you're looking at pretty much rebuilding the transmission to get the PTO hooked into the power train, as well as adding the PTO itself. You'd almost certainly be better off looking for another tractor which already has the PTO, assuming you really need it. Hope this is helpful.

My answer about the pto is just an educated guess but here goes. The live pto is certainly possible, dollar wise is another question. The complete pto unit bolts into that blank cover on the back of the tractor, IF ,the tractor has the drive shaft in place under the transmission. You would have to remove the back cover plate. [drain tran/hyd system first] Look inside of housing and see if the shaft is there. It should be a splined stub. Maybe the quickest way to tell is to see which type of hyd. pump it has. If it has the 9gpm pump mounted on the front of the engine under the distributor, shaft is not likely. If it has a blank cover plate under the distributor then it probably has the 12 gpm transmission mounted pump. The trans. mounted pump drives off the same shaft as the pto so it is probably in place, and can be used. Hope answer didn,t confuse too much. contact me if more info needed.

Brian, I have an IH 340U. Just the tractor weighs 4200 Lbs. I have the tires loaded with Rim-guard and that adds 800 or so pounds(14.9 x 28 tires). I like the tractor; has guts for it's 35 Hp.The hydraulic system is only 9 gpm, so is somewhat limited.Plenty strong, though.
No loader experience.

I have a 300 utility for 20 years now. It has a wagner loader and backhoe mounted on it. the utility's have always had poor steering. It has a front mounted hydrolic pump with a spliter valve so it has hydrolics only work on 1 end at a time.
I haul it with my 3/4 pickup and a 20 foot flat bed
