666 Hydraulic Oil Problem

For the last few years, every few months the hydraulic oil in our 666 turns milky. Think its from water, but don't know where it is coming from. Coolant levels never change, shouldn't be that. We did a visual inspection for cracks, and kept the tractor out of the weather for half of a year and the oil still turned on us. Any information would help us out. Thanks

Condensation is probably the culprit, its one of the reasons IH recommended to change Hytran yearly, you cannot stop the moisture problem from this, there are no vents or leaks unless you immerse the entire tractor, we have seen the inside of a lot of tractors and it just is a layer of frost inside the rear housings when conditions are right. The shop foreman says it looks like it snowed inside when he would take apart one to fix something.

I have a 656&560 they both have this problem.I put a radiator petcock in the drain plug after it sets awhile I open it and let the water drain out. Also put in 3 bottles of Heet so the hydraulics won"t freeze up.

You didn't say but I assume you have been changing the hydraulic oil to get rid of problem. My first thought is condensation. Is the tractor kept in a building with livestock? What type of hydraulic oil are you using? Another possibility could water be coming from an implement that you hitch tractor to frequently? Do you cross streams or other water courses during work routine? I had a 560 would pick up water in transmission that way.

Yes, we have changed the hydraulic oil and filters each time (not cheap). We have been using agritech 149 Hi-tran. We don't cross water with it, and we use the same equipment with other tractors, so I don't think that is it. What about the condensation, though? The tractor is not kept with livestock, but it is possible that is the problem. What can be done to remedy that kind of problem? We are up for suggestions. Thanks for the information.

BJK: Yes I can well imagion how expensive. It was bad 20 years ago. Problem has to be condensation. How much does this tractor get used? You do mention others. I had a 656, basically the same from clutch back. Changed it a few times in 20 years, nothing out of ordinary. Heat from transmission when working should evaporate moisture. Moisture must however escape. I have forgotten where, but that system must be vented somewhere. Check for a vent, see if it is plugged.
