Do I need a keyed ignition switch on M for 12 volt conversion?

I am converting my M to 12 volt and have seen diagrams that I need to put a keyed ignition switch in . It does have a mag if that would make a difference. I have already picked up an alternator and wire, but would like to keep the push/pull switch if possible.

You won't be able to use the push-pull from the Mag though, as its a ground-out switch. You pull it out to "undo" the ground & push it in to set the ground. You'll need one that allows current to flow through it when its pulled. The ones for a distrubutor look just like the ones for the mag, but they have two terminals on the back. Can still get them from IH, but $$$$. If you plan on continuing to use the mag, you will have to add another one of some kind to get power to excite the alt. I used one that has a light in its handle (from Radio Shack) so I remember to turn it off when I turn the tractor off. Otherwise, the battery will run down. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Bob - You don't need a keyed ignition switch! However unless you have a self-exciting (the so-called "single wire") alternator, you will need to replace the existing ignition switch with a DPDT switch. You use one set of the DPDT switch contacts to send voltage to the alternator control terminal with the ignition "on", and the other set of switch contacts to ground the magneto when "off".

You could probably find a DPDT push-pull switch to replace existing ign switch, but it may be tough to find one. However a toggle type DPDT switch can be purchased at any Radio Shack for about $5.

Another option is to install a normally open oil pressure switch on the engine (one whose contacts CLOSE on sensing oil pressure) and use that to control the alternator. A little more complex, but lets you use the existing ignition switch.

Punch below for a diagram of the DPDT switch setup...

I finally did find a ignition switch though not one that was listed in Bob M's conversion instructions. I hope that it will work. The switch I got has four connectors: 1)ignition, 2)Acc, 3)Battery, and 4)starter. According to the diagram I should hook the alternators #1 to the igniton post, battery post hooks to wire from ammeter post that comes from the battery post on the alternator, and the starter post on solenoid to the starter post on ignition switch. If this is not correct let me know. Hopefully I will get this done on the weekend.

Thanks

I liketo use a key type ignition for several reasons. I like to hook up the alternator, in particular, to the accessoryposition on a heyed switch so that when the key is off, the alternator is isolated from the battery. Diodes by their very nature bleed a little bit to ground. If one of them are bad, it bleeds a lot to ground. I like to hook the headlight switch, also to the accessory position. I like to have only ONE hot wire coming from the battery cable hookup. If a tractor is stored for some time, mice have a tendency to enjoy vinyl covered wire. No need in making too many of those wires hot.
