My dad has we we think is a 1939 Farmall H. The serial number is FBH 14557. Everywhere I have looked this is suppose to be a 40. It has several characteristics of a 39 though. it has the gear pattern molded in the top cover of the rearend and has the dip in the top cover. It also has a different PTO than any other H I have ever seen. I don't know if this makes any difference but it has 3 spoke front wheels also. Could anybody help me out. Thanks in advance. Adam

There's a lot of mis-information about the "39" tractors. The seat and transmission covers were used actually until mid-February 1940. If you go by those two features as identifying "39" tractors, then over half of them will have a serial number that is a "1940". The serial number "years" for those tractors actually run from November 1st to October 31st. IH didn't make tractors in model years after 1936, so identifying tractor features by years is just plain going to get you in trouble.

Check the serial number on right side of engine. Most of them (but not all) matched. I would suspect that it is the same and the number indicates that the tractor was produced in 1940. I agree with Dave and Andy. Check the casting letters as well. Your serial number indicates that the tractor was assembled between Jan. 1 1940 and Dec. 31 1940. Doesn't mean that they didn't use left over 39 parts to assemble it. And I am like Andy and doubt they changed the design of plateform on mid-night Dec. 31 1939 and all H's after that had the new designed plateform. I also wouldn't rule out that the tractor you got isn't a piece together tractor. The rear end of a 39 put onto the front of a 1940 or what ever. Maybe somebody just changed the plateform. Alot of peiceing together has went on over the years.

Farmalls were not produced by model year.

Production serial numbers only indicate when a tractor came off the line.

Changes were made as approved and implemented by the factory. Unless the change was very important old style parts were used up before the new style part was actually installed on a tractor.

Like David_ID said, check the casting numbers to see what month the parts were cast. It is very possible someone mixed two tractors. It is also very possible your tractor was in the transition period and had some of the "1939" parts installed. Guy Fay might be able to help you with exactly when the transmission cover plate was changed. Although it is referred to as 1939, I'd be real surprised if they made the change after shift on 12/31/39.

Lots of original tractors have casting codes from different months, just the way the castings worked their way through the system and onto the assembly line.

In my opinion way too much emphasis is put on the year of manufacture because IH did not produce by year or model year.

Check casting dates... 1940 has a J for the year code.. I had a 40 H, and mine had the gear numbers cast in too..
