I changed my M over to 12 volt, but have problems. The engine will not turn over. I put a universal ignition switch in here's how it is hooked up. Starter post hooks to small post on solenoid. Battery post hooked to ammeter. Ignition post hooked to warning light that goes to #1 wire on alternator.

I can jump the solenoid across and it will start. The wire coming from the solenoid has power coming from it. My thought is that the solenoid is bad.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

Bob - Sounds like you've got it wired right. Are the solenoid mounting ears firmly grounded? (Solenoid won't work if it's not grounded). Otherwise problem's gotta be a bad solenoid, as you suspect...

I will have to check to make sure it is grounded tomorrow. Should the wire coming from the solenoid to the switch be hot when the switch is turned off? I removed the wire and turned the switch to start and it had power.

No Bob. The BAT terminal on the key switch should be hot whenever the battery is connected. However with the key "off" there should be no power at the other switch terminals.

With the key "on" the IGN terminal will be hot. And with the key in "start", both IGN and STR terminals will be hot.

Thanks Bob.

I checked the ground on the solenoid and cleaned it up. The solenoid is a 6 volt, do I need to change it over to a 12 volt? I will try and pick up a new solenoid tomorrow and see what that does.

Bob - For best results you should have a 12 volt solenoid installed. A 6 volt can work, but may overheat and fail if operated too long on 12 volts. For the $10 or so a new 12 V solenoid costs I'd just go ahead and replace it! ...Bob M

Hi Bob,

Thanks for all the good advise, you probably get tired of people asking questions. I was thinking to day about the M solenoid. The button I took off grounds to activate the solenoid. I tried that and it fired right up. With the ignitions switch on the tractor when I turn it to start it sends current to the solenoid. Will the 12 volt solenoid work with the ignition switch? I know that there are solenoids with 1 and 2 small posts, should I get the 1 or 2?

When I started the tractor the warning light stayed on even at wide open. I read somewhere you could by pass the waring light and if everything else was right it would charge. We mine did, I'm thinking that maybe the alternator is not turning fast enough, it has a 3 inch pulley on it. If that is not it, it could possibly be the warning light. It is not the 1815 like recommended on the diagrams. It is a 12 volt light with a red lense built right in that clicks into a 1/2 inch hole.

Thanks,
Bob

No, but Bob M might, click onto his email and give him a holler. You could also get a ops manual, it should be in there
