Has anyone changed a screen? Those clamps on the vertical slats are spot welded and difficult to remove.

The screen is 3/16" Hail Screen that you can get from a good full service Hardware Store. Most of the chains don't carry it but they have the 1/8" and 1/4".

Just cut the screen away from the spot welded clamps and streighten the prongs and remove the screen. Use the old screen flattened out for a size pattern and cut your new screen that size. I start on one side and put it on the prongs when I get to the ribs I use a clamp type (3" wide jaws) vice grip pliers to form the screen around the ribs and then to hold it in place and I use just a small amount of JB Weld to attach the screen to the ribs.

I usually form and attach the screen completely and then go back and do the JB Weld, leaving the clamps in place until the JB Weld hardens.

This has worked well for me on several grills. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Leave the spot welds, just straighten the prongs. This screen was removed so the grille could be properly straightened and then re-installed. Not at all dificult.

This tractor, "Ike", has escaped the fold, but will be coming back home for the Cub Fest in June, and proudly displayed with his brother, "Big Mike".

Yes, I've rescreened several grilles and you're right, those buggars are spot welded. The trick is to cut the old screen off as close to those clamps as possible. When the new screen is layed into the grille (I find it easier to do one half of the grille at a time) attach it to the outer edge and leave the middle free until you get the other half of the grille screen attached to the opposite outer side. Then, push the screen against the horizontal ribs and down over the remaining "prongs" located in the center wide vertical rib. Carefully bend the prongs down holding the screen tightly against the ribs. I have found on some grilles that it may take some pliar work to bend the new screen into a "V" over those old clamps. This helps to tighten the screen to take out slack and helps hold the screen tight against the inside of the ribs. Takes some practice but looks good if you take your time.

Did you make the replacement screen yourself or was it an aftermarket type. I tried to be as careful as I could taking it off my C, but it was pretty brittle and didn't look too good afterwards.
