I have a 706 with 466dt .You can use your old frame rails but use 1066 motor plate and you don't have to change bottom radiator outlet. Also you need 66 series flywheel.Doing a 806 next.Sale to day with 815 combine with 414 good engine 1250.00 salvage yard engine will run 2500.00

To answer your ? it will fit. You will need 66 or 86 frame rails and clutch, two 3/4" plates to go between the frame and the front bolster. Your radiator will need the bottom neck moved to the right side, and a small hood ext. It will and has been done. The 414 is a very strong engine.

I'm going to be straight with you. I have know of a 1066 with a 466, but I don't think you'll ever find me putting a 414 in an 856. Doesn't compare on so many levels, although it would probably fit. I farm, so I know where you're coming from, but i don't think any repair on that engine (I don't know what your major problem is; Roger Welsh has told me that a tractor engine is never ruined, froze, or junk) will cost as much as you think. Now, i understand, OH, new everything, labor could run you 4,000. I suppose you have a 915 laying around with a 414, so it would be common sense. The 915 came with the 407 and later the 414, same time as tractor switch, too. Actually, to go back on my word, if I could really save two or three thousand dollars, I would switch. Like Hugh said, though, those engines are superior. If you decide to put the 414 in, please, give the 407 to IH Brad. That block shall not go to waste. Good luck.

Ever heard of an honorable discharge? That's what happened to that engine. She had a beautiful life, and to tell you the truth, although my friends say I'm plain insane when it comes to tractors, I would find a nice little spot on your farm that you don't farm and dig a hole and bury it with a little marker saying 407 and then the serial number with 17000 hours. I couldn't bear laying it somewhere to rust openly for the rest of its life. Yeah, that one it shot. Go ahead and put that 414 in, it should work fine. If it's turbocharged, keep it around 120 hp because we had horrible issues with sleeves on our 1066 (OH every 3,000 hours), although we had it pumping 235 hp, but we tuned it down to 180, used half the fuel, made 4000 hours after that OH when we traded it off. I'm going to find that tractor back. Good luck, sounds like your 856 has had a very good life, and with a new engine you can make sure the rest of it lasts as long as the 414, too. Thanks for the post.

Bill: I know how you feel, I had the same think happen to my 560 with the 282 diesel at 17 years and 11,000 hours. I was not surprised with mine as I had it turning close to 100 hp since new. Taxed the old 282 quite heavily. At 17,000 hours you got good use from your engine.

The combine engine is probably best way to go, those engines should be better than average. There comes a time when you can no longer throw big money at a tractor. I never did fix my 560 as I couldn't see spending that kind of dollars on tractor without 3 point hitch. You do have a tractor with every necessary attachment a new one could offer.

If you make a B series engine out of the 400 series or just get a B series it will use less fuel than the older engines. like in a 1989 1086.

If you monitor discussion on this site as I do everyday, I think I would look awfully hard for original 856 engine. I have never had any experience with larger 56 series tractor engines. I have with the DT414 in a 1066. The consences on here is 56 series engines were far more durable. The 414 will not generate horse power as efficiently. There has been many stories on here of 06 and 56 series tractors lugging the same disc or cultivator just as fast on substancially less fuel.
