It seems to me that the steering looseness is coming from the steering box and i'm guessing it is the worm and worm gear. It is almost a 160 degrees of steering slop (alot of steering slop). There is a steering overhaul kit on ebay for the 140 (IH PN #356552R94) will this have everything I need?

You will need to replace all the seals and check the bearings and bushings to make sure they are tight. An easy check is to drain the oil out of the box and then remove the big plug with the hex on it from the front of the box. You can then turn the steering wheel while holding the wheels straight and screw out the worm gear enough to check the ball thrust bearing on the end. If it has any play replace it. This bearing is cheap, about $10. The big plug is the clamp that holds the bearing outer race in place, so the plug must be tight against the race. You may have to put in a washer to get it to tighten up, but make sure the washer contacts only the outer race and the plug and none of the other bearing parts. Also, the castle nut that holds the bearing on the worm shaft must be tight so that the bearing race can't move on the shaft. The bearing that hold the worm wheel and shaft may need to be replace too, but you have to take a lot more apart to get to them. It is very expensive to replace the worm gear and the worm wheel gear. The worm gear and the steering wheel shaft are all one piece. You should be able to get acceptable results by replacing bearings, bushings and seals.

Haas, That was a real good suggestion of putting a shim washer in front of thrust bearing on steering shaft never thought of that!!!

Thanks scotty

Well, the reason I thought of that was because I had a tractor that the plug would not tighten in far enough to clamp the outer bearing race. So I had to put the shim in there. The way I knew it was not clamping sufficiently was that I could move the steering wheel shaft back and forth. You should not be able to do that. First time I tried it, the shim was too big and it clamped not only the outer race, but the inner too. Couldn't turn the steering wheel.

That part number 356352r is supposed to only fit a Farmall A or B. The steering shaft is different than a IH 140. Normally all you need to do is replace all the bearings, bushings and seals to tighten the steering. This works in about 9 out of 10 tractors. Email me and I can help you with what you need.
