Hydraulic drain plug size on H?

I am going to take step one of putting a "live" hydraulic system on my '49 H this weekend, the addition of an open-center spool valve to use instead of the lift-all lever.

What I need is a way to get the hydraulic fluid back to the belly resevoir, and thought I could send it back through the drain plug rather than trying to send it through the fill pipe. Can I plumb a line into the drain hole, and what size fitting would fit in that hole? That seems quite a bit easier than trying to find a fitting for the hydraulic fill hole, isn't it?

Ideas? Flaws? Other comments?

Thanks for all the help you guys give out!

The drain plug is 1/2" NPT. I routed my return to the drain plug after trying the tee in the fill - all it did was puke oil out of the breather all day. See my website for pics and more description...

Nothing, if it is a standard size. Sitting here at my desk and trying to think what type of threads, etc.. were under that filler cap, I just thought it probably wasn't a standard pipe thread so thought the drain pipe would be a better shot. Is it just pipe thread on the filler cap?

It is half inch standard pipe thread. The fill cap is 3/4 inch. Do you have heavy timing gears? Standard gears won,t work will break. If you put pump on distburtor. Just my $1. 2.98 thanks.

I do believe it is 1/2" npt threads. Routing the return line into the drain plug is the exact way i plumbed my setup, and it works fine. Your an the right track, good luck!
