656 Hydro trans questions

My father has a 656 hydro that he parked years ago because it was having problems with it missing he said. Finally he told me if I fixed it I can have it.

I changed the engine oil, put fresh diesel in it, and it started right up and ran fairly good. I want to put it in the shop and look things over better but I am afraid to tow it.

The problem is, after idling it for a while we tried to move it. The clutch pedal is stuck down. An old IH mechanic told me to manually pull the pedal back up (it is free) and try the hydro lever. I did, and it wants to move and will try and pull foward a little, but I didn't really want to jam the lever foward. Also the range lever is stuck in the road (or high) position.
I hope the hydro isn't fried. Anyone have any thoughts on what is going on?

Thanks a bunch.

BD

I recently bought a 656 also and I got it to run but it won't move. The trans is full and all the levers move but the trans won't. It also has a spin on filter and a filter on the side. The one on the side has fluid in it but the spin on filter dosn't. The steering trys to work and lift arms barley move. Is my hyd pump shot or what do I need to try next? If anyone has any info that would be great

THANKS C Gerling

i agree, don't tow. we had a hydraulic line burst on a steep highway hill, my brothers towed it 100 yards, cost us 3500 in hydro repairs.

We have a Farmall 656 Hydro. The foot pedal on the left side should have a spring which keeps the pedal up. Nothing will move if the pedal is down. The range lever on our 656 hydro was stuck too. It turned out to be the shaft on which the range lever pivots. You might check that.
Changing the oil is a good idea. To test the sysytem you might consider blocking the rear end of the tactor with the wheels off the ground and then try moving the speed lever back and forth slowly.

DO NOT TOW it more than a few feet with the range lever in neutral.Iwould drain all old Hytran and put in fresh with all new filters.I think there were two,one spin on and one down belowbehind a plate on the rt. side. The range lever MUST be in neutral ..If its been sitting that long you may be able to free up the linkage with some WD40.
Good luck
I REPEAT Don't tow it in gear

Yes the transmission is full of clean fluid.

I don't really have a whole lot of time to fool with it right now. But it would be nice to know what kind of project I am getting into. I am thinking if I get time I will change the filters and see what I can find out.

Thanks
BD
