The engine service manual for my newly-acquired 450LP doesn't show the oil capacity anywhere that I could find. (Guess I need to get an operator's manual too.) How many quarts does the C-281 engine hold? Thanks.

I have a 264 in my SM, which should have very alike pans. Capacity is 8 qts in the pan, but what I do (I have raised with this from being around M's) is put 8 qts in, run her for 10 minutes or so (could be less, nice to just sit and listen to her run though because you have an excuse to just sit there) and add another quart for the heck of it. Often, it will smoke after an oil change until the rings set, so you burn a little there and if you have test cocks like I'm used to, you can drip a little out and not have to worry for a long time about draining enough to need to add oil. So, in short, 8 or 9 qts will do the job just fine. (On a side note, we use Cenex Heavy Duty Diesel engine oil, easier on older engines.) Good luck.

I'll get a couple gallons and go from there.
