I bought an A at a sale last year. I'm sure it had sat a long time, inside, didn't smoke at all at the sale. Got it home and started using it and it started to smoke but only sometimes. It may smoke when you first start it and then quit when you are working it or just the opposite.I changed the oil when I first got it and ran awile and then I put a little trans. fluid in the oil an ran a few day to try to loosen a sticking ring if that was it, then changed it again. It doesn't burn a lot of oil. I'm sure a set of rings would be good but it runs to good to mess with that yet. Most of the smokers I've ever had did it all the time. Any ideas? Thanks Al

A good ole compression test will tell the problem, valve guides could be the problem when first being started. Rings would be all the time smoke ?

Dick: In my case I know compression is off a bit, however it still has more power than my Super A which has excellent compression. I guess a guy that likes spending money would do a engine job on tractor. I however don't like spending money.

I drive a 1986 Buick LeSabre, not the sharpest looking car in the world anymore. But you know something, if its a 15 min, 2hour or 4 hour drive it goes there and back. I will also bet it hasn't been to the shop anymore often than my neighbours' new cars, nor are the bills as high,in the past two years.

Al: I have a Farmall 130 which I have had for years. It has been doing as you suggest for about 5 years. It is definately oil smoke. Like you I don't believe it is worth tearing into a ring job. I tried putting some penetrating oil in cylinders and that works for awhile. What however seems to be more effective is adding a commercial product called motor job in a can, when I change oil. I never really believed in these products, and at age 60 it was my first time to use this. Actually it is motor job in a plastic bottle now.

Is this oil smoke, or smoke from too-rich a fuel mixture? The part-time nature of the smoke as you describe it, makes me wonder if it is really from burning oil. The only thing I can think of is a clogged crankcase breather or something along those lines.

If this is fuel smoke, you might have a sticking float valve in your carb, or some other issue with the carb.
