My 1953 has started a leak on the touch control reservoir. The leak is coming from the front side of the reservoir, where the touch control rod connects(the right rod). The leak comes from around a leather boot protector on the rod. What is required to repair this?

Daniel and Gary are correct. However, if you are going to the trouble to remove the gas tank and the touch control unit, in my opinion, you might as well pull the head and put the whole kit in. Not hard to do, just follow the diagram. I don't know of anything you can do to mess it up, unless you put it back together wrong. Needs to be very clean.

There are o-rings on the pistions and control valves, probably one of these has given out. You can get a set of gaskets and o-rings and other rebuild parts from IH. The boots are sold seperatly and so is the filter screen. The kit is around $80.00 and the large boots were around $16 each, the small ones were around $6, and the filter screen (if yours is bad) was $50. You can also get a kit for the pump for around $20. I would get the rebuild book from binder books it shows the proceedure and is less than $8.00. Serviceman's guide to touch-contol is the name.

Piece of cake!!! Get a new gasket where the lines connect to the right side of the touch control (you called it reservoir. Buy the two "O" rongs for the control rods. Now, you're ready tpo go to work. Remove the three bolts that hold the manifold (pipes) on the right side, Disconnect the touch control rods at the bottom side(s) of the unit. Remove the fuel tank. Remove the four bolts that mount the unit to the clutch housing (3/4 inch heads) Set the unit where you can get at everything on the front (tractor front) of the unit. Remove the lift arms from the unit. Removal of the control arms from the lift arms is self evident as you get to it. Remove the control rods from the front of the unit by sim,ply pulling them out. Fashion a "pick" out of a welding rod or similar item with a hook on the end to reach in and pull the "o" rings out of there groove. Work the new "O" ring into the same groove, replace the control rod. There will be no need in pulling the head off the other end. If it were a later model with plastiv valves, I would say, do it, but, your Super A should be all metal inthere. No sense in asking for trouble. You probably need to remove the four small bolts from the left side and clean the screen and the reservoir. Be careful whenputting it back in since forcing it in can collapse it. Rethe unit on the tractor, fill with oil. If it does not imalmost immediately move the lift arms, apply a little air pressure around a grease rag to the filler hole to prime it. If, when you move the control levers to their limit, the unloader valve opens, adjust the limts on the bottom of the unit. Good luck-sTILL A PIECE OF CAKE.

Gary-Miss:

Your directions were very helpful.
The worst part was finding out how heavy the touch control unit was. I got the boot and o'rings replaced without even pulling out the control rod completely out of the unit.
I cleaned the strainer( used a "bendable" pick up tool with a paper towel to reach in and pull the dirty clumps out.)
I used an engine hoist to put the unit back in.
No leaks now!... I took a few photos but have no where to post them right now..
Thanks again...
