Have a couple of trucks Im considering buying.One is a 01 F-350 duelly with power stroke and the other is an 02 2500 Dodge with the big Cummins.Both are good deals.low miles and in good shape overall,although the Ford is better equipped,power seats,windows and such.Just want your opinions,good and bad of each,problems you may have had,etc..... pulling M Farmalls with which ever I get and oh yea,my 49 Cub.(If I can get them on my trailer at the same time.)

Just to put my 2 Cents worth in here, I have a 92 dodge cummins 4x4 with the automatic trans. The odometer reads just under 190,000 miles. This has been by far the most dependable truck I've ever owned. It is used daily to haul heavy loads and never breaks a sweat.
The only thing other than regular oil changes and valve adjustments, that has ever been done to the engine was a fuel shutoff seleniod shorted out on the injector pump. now brakes have always been really weak and needed replaced fairly often.
I did have the rear end split the spider gears at about 175,000 but no idea why.
As to fuel milage I don't even want to tell you how bad it does, but will. This truck gets around
12 miles/ gallon loaded or empty. It has done this since I bought the truck in '98 with 100k on the odometer.
I'd never buy a cummins with an automatic again just because I feel this may be what is contributing to the poor fuel milage. and once you get into high gear you never need to shift anyway. the other reason I don't like the A/T is it makes the truck useless for 4 wheel drive. By the time the torque converter engages the the engine is putting out so much torque that the truck just digs in and burys it self.
The next truck that I buy will be a dodge but not with an Auto.
My friend's Ford powerstroke spends more time in the shop than it does in his hands. multiple transmissions and other problems.

Co-worker of mine just clocked 380,000 on his untouched 1 ton 4x4 Dodge. Never has seen an easy day, a warm day, a trip to town without a whole lotta weight on the hitch and a whole lotta trailer behind. He is pleased as punch, being a grain hauler, a skid loader on the fifth wheel, and a buncha abuse between. I can't speak for or agin any diesels except the GM 6.3 (loud but reliable) or the early powerstroke ( quiet but cantankerous). I'm sure I'm the only one with this experience, nickel's worth of free advice.

Just for the record the engine in the Dodge trucks are marketed under
Cummins but the engine is actually
a CDC engine.(Case Diesel Corperation).
These engines are used in some of the smaller CaseIH tractors.Also used in some forestry applications.

Well, I wouldn't go with a Dodge again. Have a 99 3/4 ton, 4x4, cummins mated to auto transmission. First was the injector pump, dealer charged $4k, front end problems(tie rods etc.), power steering pump $750, transmission went out, $1200 for a new turbo, rear end is clunking now, fuel gauge electrical problems, front seal on motor is leaking bad, and a few other minor problems. Have 115000 miles and it hasn't even been worked that hard. As far as fuel mileage, 13-15 empty, can't believe the high mileage others claim. No more Dodge here!

Here is my 2 cents worth, and I will say upfront that I have a Cummins. I have driven both trucks extensively. The Powerstroke is a nice engine, but the ones I have driven (I am currently on #3), seem to just loose a little breath when they hit about 60K miles. The Cummins runs as strong as the day I bought it. The Powerstroke starts kind of funny in my opinion. You gotta crank on it for a few seconds before it fires. The Cummins fires up immediately. If it ever didn't, I would be worried. The Powerstroke fuel mileage comes nowhere close to the Cummins. I drive a Powerstroke at work, and a Cummins at home. I can't comment on the new 6.0L Powerstroke, all the ones I have driven are the 7.3L model. Cummins VS Powerstroke has the makings of a classic battle kind of like Red VS Green. But we all know why they are green, its just envy.

The reason the PSD cranks longer when starting is to have the HP oil pump for the injection system build pressure to fire the injectors. They's a check valve in the feed tube to the resivour the HP pump gets it's oil from. If this check valve lets the oil leak You'll have to crank longer. My '96 has always started after 3-4 revolutions. The HP pump can operate up to 2200 psi and the ECU won't try to fire the injectors till it senses at least 375 psi.

I, myself, would go with the Ford - my brother-in-law has had 2 Dodges with the (Cummins) in the past 3 years - nothing but trouble. Weak tranny, weak rear-end, and trouble with the motor. Just my 2 cents!

Cummins all the way I love mine and it gets way better fuel milage. And look at this point who's been around longer cummins has.

MYSELF I AM A BIG FORD FAN, BUT PUTTING THAT ASIDE I HAVE DRIVEN THE DODGE AND THE FORD DIESEL TRUCKS AND THE FORD POWERSTROKE IS THE WAY TO GO, I HAVE A FRIEND THAT HAS A 1999 AND IT HAS OVER 200,000 MILES WITH ALMOST NO ENGINE REPAIRS, THEY HAVE PLENTY OF GUTS TO PULL WHAT YOU NEED TO PULL, JUST STAY AWAY FROM THE CHEVYS !

The most important thing is the rear-end ratio aint none of them any good if the gears arent what you need for pulling loads.

Me and my dad pull an 88 Oliver, a WC Allis, and a Farmall M with our F-350 powerstroke on a 30 foot trailer with three heavy planks on it. Under load like that she gets 9-10 mpg. We haven't had much trouble with it, just two starters, but that is it. In my own opinion, Ford and Dodge are better than Chevy's, truck wise.

I work for a construction company that supplies me a truck had a 95' dodge, then 00'dodge, and now a 01' dodge I really like them we get new cab and chasis, cummins diesel and 5 speed and put a flatbed on them. The loads we pull are 18,000 lbs backhoes with no problems. I also know guys with fords and they like them. Another guy I work with just got a new chevy with the duramax with a automatic (it will out pull the dodge easily) he likes it. I think it's a matter of prefference and where you get the best deal.
