Hi I was wondering if anyone could help me with what kind and how much oil goes into the belly pump for the hydraulics on a Farmall H?

Thanks Aaron

Do not use 30w oil in your belly pump. There is a big difference between 30w and straight 30 weight non-detergent oil.

30w is a winter oil (hence the w). 30 weight non-detergent is necessary because regular detergent motor oil (common oils on the shelf) will foam in a hydraulic situation.

I use Hy-Tran or universal hydraulic fluid in my belly pump and I haven't found anything I can't lift yet.

Steven, correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there is any such thing as a straight 30W oil, detergent or otherwise, as people just use the W as an abbreviation for weight. SAE 30 oil (which is summer or warm climate oil) will not say W on the can (if I go look in my shop, I'll probably make a liar out of myself). If it is 10W-30, 15W-40, 20W-50, etc, then the W is considered to mean winter. Of course these are detergent oils. I do remember oil that said 20/20W, not sure what that was, back in the 50's. The important thing is to use non-detergent, which will be single grade.

No, Steve is right. The "W" on motor oil label does mean winter. I have researched this topic. H-T fluid is the best oil to use in the belly pump.

I didn't say W did not mean winter, just that you won't find it associated with a single grade SAE 30 oil, as SAE 30 is used in the summer, or year around in warmer climates. As I said most people including myself say 30 weight or 30W, using the W incorrectly to mean weight. Also heard that SAE 30 develops more pressure in a belly pump because it is not as thin as Hy Tran. Also fewer leaks. Belly pump is not very complicated and does not require hydraulic fluid. As was mentioned, use Hy Tran if sharing implements with modern tractors.

Ummm... dunno. I'll look next time I'm in the oil department but I'm sure I've seen oil rated as simply 20w or 30w for winter use. SAE 30 is the summer oil, correct on that one for sure.

I'll look around next time I get to town - on the farm for spring break!

Perhaps they sell it in ND, because of all those blizzards you get in July?

I believe that you will find that it is supposed to have 30w motor oil in it. It most likely will not generate as much pressure with hydraulic fluid.

Just to let you know, hydraulic oil (AW-68) and 30 non-detergent are the same thing.
