While retorquing my F30 cylinder head, a head stud pulled out of the block. I was torquing at 100 lbs., so I didn't think that was excessive.
Question is, is this repairable, if so, how?
If repairable, will the cylinder head have to be
removed? I'd appreciate any advice.

You will have to remove the head to seak repair. Did the threads pull off of the stud? Or did the threads pull out of block? You should be able to tell by looking at the stud that pulled out. If the stud still has its threads on it, then you damaged the block threads. If the stud threads are gone (more likely than not) then you probably done more damage to the stud then the block. In this case (and maybe try it anyways) try to retap the block threads and try a new stud. You will have to retap to clean out the threads off the stud that are left in there. Otherwise you will have to drill and use a helicoil or something of that nature.

I had the same thing recently on my 706D. I used a helicoil, and while torquing the head it pulled out. I found a threaded steel insert from Mcmaster Carr company. They have several different sizes. Simply drill out the hole and tap it to accept the insert, and your are set. It comes with a thread locking compount already applied.

You can buy a heli coil kit at the parts house., Pretty straightforward installation. Make sure the final coil is a LITTLE bit below the top of the block. We use them all of the time on 600-to 700 horse racing engines with 13:1 compression ratio, so I don't think 6.5 or 7.5 compression ratio will cause any trouble.
