How many of each of these tractors are still around and running today. I know that the MD's had head problems and I have heard the 400's did too. Just curious. Thanks for any input, Adam

I agree with everyone else here. The problem wasn't the heads but rather the operator. The engines on these tractors have to be warmed up on gas and then switched to diesel. Then when you are done you need to run it on gas to let it cool down. The problems arose when people got impatient and didn't warm up and cool down the engine properly.

My 1947 MD still plows snow every winter and pulls in stock class in the summer. I wrote to Red Power a long time ago and asked how many MDs were made and they said 18,250. Great tractor.

Adam: The kind of people that had trouble with heads on these gas start deisels, are the type that have their car or pickup in drive at 0 degrees F before the starter stops turning.

Red and Jim know what their talking about.

I have three of these IH gas start diesels. They only had a head problem they had was operator error. Like any other part of the tractor that was not properly used or taken care of. I have a total of 30 thousand hours on these three diesels and have never had any head problems. Remember there are people out there that can tear up a tank.

I don't know for sure how many are still running today, several I would think, but I have 2 1948 MD still running and still farming.
