Sometime between the '41 and '43 H, International Harvester moved the starter switch from the gas tank support bracket to the steering post. I have a '42, serial # 100xxx that still has the switch on the gas tank support bracket but is offset to the right whereby you can put your foot behind the steering post and step on it. It does not have the rod through the steering post nor does it have a hole for it. How long did IH have this starter switch mounting.

There was another style that was very similar to a M starter lever that a few H's had on them but you don't see them very much. The M lever won't work because the steering post on a H is mounted further away from the gas tank support than on a M.

I have a 40, 42, and 43. The 43 deffinately has the switch mounted on steering post. The 40 is on gas tank support and I believe with push rod. It is a parts tractor. However my 42 is also like yours. Mounted on rear gas tank support and I beleive without any actuating push rod. I will look at the serial number and see if I can tell how it was from factory whether it ever had a lever or not. I will repost what I find out after I take a better look.

I moved mine up on the steering column so it was easier to use, 41' M. I had to replace the column because it rotted off because of the starter rod hole. My 2 cents.
