Hopefully someone can help me here. On the left seat support bracket just behind the serial number plate is a shield shaped plate held on with three bolts. Other than holding the wire retainer clip attached on the outside what is its purpose?

I believe that is a sheild for the belt pulley.

This shield is far to small, it is shaped like a shield and is only about 2 inches by 4 inches. Also, it is bolted flat against the seat bracket. It is almost like a backing plate.

My super A had the same thing - it turned out to be the base of a broken rear light bracket.

Rear light is correct-thats where mine is also.Its a combo white/red light that really looks neat at night.
