Thanks to all of you who responded to my message yesterday. In the message, I was asking for help because I dropped a washer down the exhaust pipe and into the manifold. I tried a magnet with no luck and ended up pulling off the manifold and found the washer inside the head laying on top of the closed valve. What I really appreciate was the suggestion not to start the tractor. After seeing the washer laying on of the valve, I could see where it could cause damage to the valve and possible the piston if I had tried to start it. Thanks again for your feedback!

Most overhead valve setups will most likely duplicate your experience. For a flathead engine, the washer in the exhaust manifold would be extremely unlikely to get into the engine. But your experience shows that all advice must be carefully evaluated.
