I have a 300U I got from my father. I have found a PS unit, but when the guy sent it to me he did not send the cover plate that goes on the hydraulic control valve.
This is the one that the large pipe and fitting must attach to.
Do I really need this cover plate? Do I need to install the large pipe and fitting?
If I really need it, does anyone have one?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Bill, the original power steering setup for the 300U required a special regulator, safety, and flow control valve which is different from the one used on the tractors which came without power steering. This valve is the one in the rear next to the hydraulic fluid reservoir with no control valve handle coming out of it.

You probably don't have it, but will need it in addition to the cover you're talking about to make the power steering work the way IH originally intended. Of course, a kludge is possible if necessary.

Take a look at the valve you've got and see if it's got plugged holes and such in the top, bottom, and rear. If so, that's the one used with power steering (valve body is part #364842R or #364844R); the one used with non-power-steering tractors was #360622R.

Send me an email if you've got more questions. I may be able to help with parts, also.

Thanks. I have the small safety/relief valve. All I do not have is the cover plate with the hole for the big fitting. If you have one or know of one for sale...I am in need of I suppose.

You're talking about the fitting that feeds pressure from the back bank of valves to the front bank? If so, you could probably make a cover plate from 1/2 inch or so steel, and put a hole in line with the pressure passage, tap that hole for a hydraulic hose fitting and feed your front valves with that. If you don't have front valves (i.e. you only have fast-hitch, no loader or remotes) you don't need that fitting, so the cover you have should work fine.

No loader, no extra hydraulics...just the fast hitch. Maybe I can get by without it???

Maybe!? The parts book shows this system hooked up two ways. One uses an external connection between the rear of the regulating/safety valve and the cover plate with the big hole that you're talking about, and the other doesn't.

I think the difference (probably) depends upon which version of the regulating/safety valve is used (IH is remarkably unclear about this, so I'm guessing). The original valve (body #364842R) was supplied with all 300U (and 350U before #4940) tractors with power steering, and required the external connection. My 300U has this, although the power steering has long-since disappeared. The newer regulating/safety valve (housing #364844R) was designed so this external connection wasn't required (probably, I think).

So you might get away without the cover with the big hole. Let us know what you find out when you get all this installed and (hopefully) working the way you want.

I would think so. If you have any problems with it, ping me at this e-mail address (just click on my name above) and I'll be glad to help you sort it out. I just got done rebuilding my p/s system last year.
