I have the '55 farmall 400 gas with the sesonal disconect. When you engage the seasonal, and turn the pto off, (i beleive lever forward), it makes a growling noise, but when you pull it back to turn it on, you will never hear it again. I just have it disconected for now, incase i have something wrong.

When You leave the PTO running make sure You have a PTO shield in place. And the stub guard to cover just the spinning shaft would be a good idea also. A pants leg or shirt sleeve caught up on that spinning shaft is REALLY gonna hurt.

Byrce the independent PTO has a planatery gear set in that rear housing to reduces the high idle from 1550 down to 540. There are a lot of gears that still turn in the IPTO housing even when the lever is locked forward. If you don't have the bands adjusted just right for the off position it will heat up the oil and overflow the vent tube. Like the other posts I usually leave mine in the on position. In the on position it also puts the lever back out of my way also.
