I'm trying to remove the radiator on my H! It has a hole in the top tank with the steering shaft through it. Does the shaft pull out toward the front or does it come out toward the rear? The shaft is very rusty and might not disconnect at the U Joint. Do I need to remove the steering worm gear to take it off?

When you take the bolt out of the U joint. Be sure to remove the washer that is in the crack. This washer fits in a grove in the shaft. Had a heck of a time with mine.

As the others said, the steering shaft has to be taken loose at the universal joint to remove it. Once that is loose, you can take the big plug out of the front of the steering gear housing and screw out the worm gear. The worm gear and the shaft are all one piece so there is no taking them apart. On the front of the worm gear, there is a ball bearing(thrust bearing) held on by a castle nut and a washer. While you have it out check the bearing for play. If it has any play in it, replace it. The bearing is cheap and any play or wear will cause play in the steering system.

Drive a chisel in the opening of the joint and it will slide out easier but watch the joint as you turn the shaft out to make sure it is sliding out or you will bend or bust the steering post. Check your water pump bearings for wear while your radiators off just for the heck of it.

Did you get those #$%@& nuts off the two bolts on the bottom tank? I an convinced that getting those nuts off is one of the most aggravating jobs you will ever run into when you are working on your H. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

You may want to apply some heat with a torch to get the shaft to separate at the u-joint. Or use penetrating oil and patience.

Front... remove large nut on upper bolster, and the steering shaft, once disconnected will litterally unscrew out the front, Replace the bushing and seal when it's apart

I am sorry but shaft must be removed, take plug out of front of bolster and somehow disconnect the shaft at the ujoint.
