This saturday we went to plow about 10 acres of part alfalfa and part former ten year. Our plow somehow got rusted, but didn't get pitted so we were able to use a wire brush and sander on a hand held grinder to clean them up. We got lucky on that one. Anyway, the real kicker is we had an IH 550 plow, which is 5 bottom 16 inch. I blieve my grandpa originally bought this plow for his 826. We never got a bigger one because we don't use it much, the last time we used it was about 15 years ago. Well, we put it on our 1486 with a 3 sets of full wheel weights on each rear wheel, the odd l dual on one side, and a full set of 12 75 pound suitcase weights on the front. I think it was a combination of being a little bit wet, although it wasn't that muddy, and plowing deep, but that 5 bottom pulled that 14 hard. The front end was constantly in the air. This was more in the ten year, as my dad, my grandpa, and I concluded hadn't been plowed in forever. Anyway, just thought this was an interesting piece of info. when you consider there are people out there pulling 4 bottoms with a 460. And yes I know it is possible, so please don't jump all over me. This was the hardest I had ever seen that tractor pulled and that includes using a 9 shank Glenco Soil Saver disc chisel and 30 ft field cultivater, and some tractor pulls at 13000 and 15000 lbs classes.

I have spent many a hour plowing over the years. My experience tell that plowing under alfala, expecially if the stand has been in existance for a number of years is one of the hardest crops to plow.
