What's it cost?

Hi all. My grandfather has an old A Farmall (not sure what year), that has been under his barn for awhile. I know it's been run at least 2 or 3 years ago, so I know the engine hasn't seized, and as far as I can remember, it ran pretty good (once you handcranked the beast). So, my question is, about what would it cost if I tore it down and restored it? I'm not talking show quality, but I want it to look and run nice. I'm a college student now and I like old stuff, and I don't think this would be terribly expensive to do. I'm pretty good with my hands, I'm just not sure what kind of equipment and stuff I'd have to buy.

Thanks, and sorry for the long post.

I picked up my A for $500 and I put $800 in the motor but I spent the money on the complete kit(valves and everything) this also included machine work. Iam hopeing to have it all done for about $1500 or so. Iam doing most of the work and the tires are good.Have fun.

Restore? Maybe $3000-up. If all you do is put pistons and sleeves in the engine and paint it, maybe $700-$1000, depending on the cost of the engine kit and quality of the paint (consider your labor free) You can put several hundred dollars in nothing but gaskets, bearings and seals. It isn't cheap if you do a good job.

I guess I wasn't thinking "restore". I would just want it to look nice and run good. It may not really be feasible. Just an idea, I guess.

You dont have to do it all at once any way.
Pick one section at a time and break up the cost.
I have been working on my H for about 9 mos so far.
I have done paint, some seals, Steering wheel, rebuilt the bolster, stickers and some other misc stuff. I have put in about $550 so far.

If your tractor runs now and has fair tires. You are ahead of the game. No need to spend the big bucks all at once. Here you can check out my web site and see what I did with $550.
Oh I didnt count the $300 I paid for a hand clutch. Thats just gravy spending.

How did you paint your tractor? I'm not sure what kind of condition the tires are in. They'll probably hold air at least, and I THINK the engine will still run. There's an old sicle mower that's been sitting out for awhile, too. It may be too far gone to bother with, though.

Thanks, Blain

Its all in what you want to to do. I hand sanded and primed all the sheet metal and gas tank on my M then a buddy of mine shot the paint (Van Sycle(?) impliment with hardner). It ran about $65. I then brush painted the castings and the rims (after many, many hours of sanding and cleaning). I didn't paint the engine except for the oil and air filter covers, with all the grease cleaned off it looked like new anyway. The engine ran fine so I didn't screw with it other then pulling the valve cover to check the lash and pull the oil pan to clean the sludge. For about $175 (including decal set) I got a very presentable tractor. Some guys would go nuts about the kind of paint or using a brush, but as a weekend warrior it looks very sharp. I was lucky that the sheet metal was in very shape with just a lot of fade and only one previous aftermarket paint job to remove. When its not being used its in a shed so the paint I put on should look good for a decade or more.

Blain, since you have expressed even an awareness of this old treasure of your granddad's, believe me, you will regret it twenty years from now if you let this tractor get away from you now. The cost to restore is relatively cheap, when you consider other things you could be blowing your money on and the wonderful therapy it provides working on it. Besides, you have something to show for it that you and your family can be proud of for years to come. And don't be afraid of not knowing how to do something -- this discussion board is like having a room full of Farmall Engineers/Master Mechanics right at your disposal!
I bet you not one of these people who has done a restoration on an old tractor will tell you they regret having gone through it. I'm almost through with my dad's Super C, and I've had the time of my life working on it. Good luck!

If its all there, it probably isn't too far gone to fix. It'd be great to have an implement that is the same vintage as the tractor! (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

None of this old stuff is ever too far gone to be worthless, even if all you get is one useable part.
