What'll it cost, part II

Ok, I asked earlier about the cost of fixing up a Farmall A (1946). I scouted it out this weekend, and grandaddy told me it'd run with a new battery. It needs the generator rebuilt, maybe the starter (have to handcrank it now), but that's all mechanically. It is rusty, but I can put in the labor and stuff on that.

So, for a nice-looking work tractor (not going all out here), what do you think it'll cost?

I'm just trying to get an estimate to see if it's a reasonable undertaking. It's got a couple plows for it, and a sicle mower that I may work on, too. Thanks, Blain

Rustoleum makes paint that is actually labelled Farmall Red, Ford Blue, AC Orange etc. It worked fine for me as I was just trying to stop and prevent rust on a tractor that was in good shape and would be used for mowing. -- Martin

While it is true that Rustoleum and others make paint that is labled Farmall red, there is a big difference in color, Especially noticeable when you get it next to the correct color. I will not tell you to not use the rustoleum brand, but if you compare prices, you will find that the Case-IH brand does not cost any more than the dime store brands and has far superior quality as well as being the correct color.

Blain: Kelly is about right unless you have to start going into engine, transmission or rear end. If it is just a work tractor, I wouldn't bother with anything but spray cans on paint. three to four cans should do the trick and really your just wanting to preserve. That is all I do with mine and I touch them up every year or so. I use a rust paint. Get a good coat on bottom side of fuel tank. Take sheet metal off and do both sides. Easy to clean and paint rest of tractor when sheet metal is off. From 300 feet off highway mine look just as the pro paint jobs, or at least if I leave them outside people drive in wanting to know if they are for sale.

Ok, thanks. That sounds pretty reasonable. I was also wondering what is the best way to paint these tractors? I guess a paint gun would be best, but are spray cans ok? I would think probably not. Also, are rust converters worth using, or are they not worth the $$?

I would not bother with rust converters. If you are going to paint, I would spend several hours with some 300 grit and wet sand. You will be surprised at how much paint and rust comes off, and how easily it comes off. The spay can is one way to go, and if your good you can lay an nice even coat on. The problem you might run into is that it tends to fade quickly. I had a buddy shoot the tin on my M with a about a quart of impliment paint with harderner added. I didn't have him do the head lights though, (didn't have any at the time). I sprayed those with a can. Everything matched when done, but the head lights have faded noticable in the last three years compared to the rest of the tractor. The one thing I wouldn't skimp on is the sanding of the tin, nothing looks more amaturish or cheap then paint over rust, the couple hours spent will more then make pay off in looks and durability. Especially when it can be done for just a couple dollars and an afternoon.

On a tractor the size of an A, the spray cans work great! I get my paint from the local Case-IH dealer, #2150 rouge red.
