H with Fire Crater Pistons...question

When fire crater pistons were installed in an H, were other changes made such as the distributer or was a different cam used? I have one bad fire crater piston in my project tractor and I was thinking about replacing all the pistons with flat top pistons but didn't know if other components were changed to match the fire craters.

Thanks, Bob

My friends H has fire crater pistons and all that was done when they were put in over 30 years ago putting them in with new rings no other modifications were made.

I have step head pistons in my H and after I changed the advance the engine had beter low end power. The parts are expensive from IH but after looking at one it wasnt hard to modify the original parts.

Changes were made to distribitor and jetting but you would not notice any practical difference. Changes might have gained 2 or 3 HP. I have been running distribitor off of Firecrater Super M on my 1941 A for 25 years and it runs near perfect as far as I can tell. Just one more opinion.

No, just the pistons were changed. Other things could have been changed, but they will still work with flat top pistons.

Why not go with with step heads? No sense in losing all your power when you don't have to.

On a side note, I might have another extra firecrater from an H in the parts bin. I know Steven H has an extra one because I sent him 2 when he needed one.

There was a carburetor changeover kit and a distributor changeover kit that came with the firecrater packages. These kits included new jet packages for the carburetor, and a different distributor shaft to change the ignition timing. IH also did make new bases for the H4 magneto to also account for this ignition timing difference. The picture below (sorry about the quality) is a piece of dealer literature that shows which ignition and carburetor packages were included in each set. The H Firecrater set is 374311R. I do have a set of TRW firecrater copies that are 100% identical in dimension, weight, and design of the IH firecraters. If interested, email me for more info.

Just how do you know if that KIT is in there. i have a H that has firecrater pistons and well to say the least i just dont =seem to think that it is very strong. think that my other H with smaller pistons that are flat tops gave me more power. i just rebiult the motor so it isnt bad ring, comp or carb. i am woundering if that isnt what is wrong now the lack of a carb kit and dist post?

The distributor shaft will be marked differently than the original. The distributor shaft if I remember right for the H was stamped A for the non firecrater Pistons and sleeves, and AS for the firecrater sets. I think this info is found on the tuneup page on my website. As for the actual part numbers, look in the parts book (late revision) and find the firecrater changeover kit. it will tell you the packages included, and then find them in the parts book and the details will give you the specific part numbers of each item in the package.

Learn something new everyday. Everyone I've talked to that put in Firecraters said it was just a piston and sleeve kit. Thanks for the info!

Bob, I did this. I bought an aluminum piston from IHC and had a welding shop add a dome and used it with the other 3 good pistons. It runs fine. They just have to be careful not to get it too hot when they weld it.
