I recently bought a 48 Cub a couple months ago. Last night my buddy and I got into a discussion about whether I should put a lead sub in the gas. Should I? If so, any recommendation on brand?

Thanks

Well, the way I was told is if it doesnt havethe hardened seats, use it,BUT if your not really going to work it or run it much, dont worry about it.I dont know whats in any of my tractors, never had any problems to warrant the worry.I kinda look at it like this, after all of those bottles of lead sub, sooner or later Im gonna pay for hardened seats any ways so what the diffrence?

Those engines and heads were designed to use lead gasoilne. Unless you have hardened valve seats its best to use an additive. Thats why some people desire LP gas heads for their tractors (they have hardened valve seats). The best and cheapest additive to use is 2-cycle oil. Its designed to stay mixed with the gas unlike some other products that are more expensive (marvel mystery). I have a rebuilt JD model M that i mow with. I've mowed for a year w/o out adding oil and nothing happened but I add oil now. Its cheap and good insurance. No smoke visible either when I use the 2-cycle oil so dont worry about that. Use 1 oz/gallon.

Yea, when I went back into the forum archives I noticed it was a semi-heated subject not long ago. After reading all of the back and forth on the forum and a couple of articles, I, for the most part, probably won't use it. The hardest thing I will do is mowing (granted with the Woods 59" deck that came with it I will be running at or near full throttle). I am thinking about adding it maybe every-other tank full for the benefit valve lube purposes. I did not read anything good or bad about having to consistantly or not consistantly use it. Some do some don't but from reading the past history on this forum, most don't add it and feel it should be considered if the tractor is ran hard.

What I have learned from this is:

1. Some topics are perhaps best left alone.
2. Check the archives before posting a question.

Thanks, Andy

Don't worry about it. See the archives for lots of discussions on this in the last year
