I have a IH 574 which I purchased within the past year. At one point last summer I was running a brush hog and the tractor began surging over and under the RPM setting. It would swing about 300 rpm. Now days it doesn't seem to be running quite right.

I checked the fuel system and now I'm wondering if the governor is working properly. If I run in gear with the throttle about 1/2 open and begin up a hill the engine doesn't maintain speed. I know theres plenty of engine left since if I open up the throttle the engine will speed up but the way I understand it, the governor should take care of this automatically to try to maintain the set engine speed.

Any ideas??

Brad, I have a 584 and last summer I thought it didn't seem to be performing right and sometimes would surge, I found that the fuel shut off switch cable had moved and it wasn't opening up the fuel switch all the way...a turn of the screwdriver and sliding the cable a quarter inch and the tractor ran like new...check and make sure it opens all the way..... I had a similar problem with my 7000 allis and my IH 560 after I got a batch of fuel with moisture in it. Talked to a guy at the local diesel service shop and he said it was probably the metering valve in the diesel pump. He recommended using Stadyn (not sure of spelling) fuel additive at about double the recommended strength and working the engine hard for a couple of hours. It solved the problem on the 560 but I had to have him work on the 7000. Wasn't too bad cost wise (about $100). His opinion is that even condensation in a fuel tank of a tractor that isn't used frequently causes this problem.
