I think your tractor may be a little out of tune, I use a 6' Howse trailer type bush hog on my Super C in 2nd gear for grass up to 6" tall, and 1st gear for really nasty stuff with no trouble at all. Check your points and timing, some new spark plugs wouldn't hurt either, and deffinately get that over-running coupler, it cost me a radiator and a hole in the grille before I got mine..

Bob, Be sure the leading, or front of the rotary cutter is lower then the back. With the front lower, (two or three inches) the blades only have to cut on the front half of the cycle, and are well above the stubble on the rear half, ie are not cutting the stubble lower. The cutter will require approx half the HP with the front lower then the back, as the blade can practically swing free on the back half of the cycle. This practice is especially helpful with lower HP tractors.

I mow with a C on a 5' bushog and a 7' sickle bar. The sickle bar you don't even know is there. The bushog works well in all but the thickest grass. When I get very thick and tall stuff I have to drop down a gear or take a narrower slice. DULL MOWER BLADES ROB HP, and I've found it helps to anticipate a real thick area rather than trying to give it more gas after it's lugging down. Last, if you don't have an overiding coupler on the PTO, get one. No, it woln't help with HP or thicker grass, but greatly improves drivability with a bushog. ie: it will alow you to downshift and keep moving before the bushog blades stop turning, and let you stop before you hit that tree or gate;)

What is an overriding coupler and where do I get one. I have a Farmall B with a 5 ft bushhog and based on the comments it sounds like I might need one. I haven't done any mowing with my bushhog yet because I need to weld some plate on the deck so I'm not sure how well it is going to mow.

Thanks,

Phil

A real spiffy over running clutch is available a 1-800-345-0169 for $35 for the 1 1/8" and for $36.50 for the 1 3/8" pto shaft. These people do not rip you off for shipping and handling. If your pto shaft does not have a groove in the side for a lock pin you will have to grind one but it is simple and takes only a few minutes with a small side grinder. I had one of the old style clutches on an old ford but I like the ease this new design has for attaching and removal. When I orded mine about two weeks ago I asked if it was in stock and I was told they had 14 on hand then.

Overrunning coupler is just a ratchet (like a socket wrench) that allows the mower to spin faster than the PTO shaft. The PTO is geared to the transmission, so even if you have the clutch in the momentum of the blade will push the tractor.

Stan is very correct. The last person I assisted trying to cut with a 4 foot bushhog behind a low HP tractor needed a mower tune up. It is essential to have the blades sharp and to be able to get the cut debris discharged from under the cutter. At 1-800-345-0169 they have an overrunning clutch for $42 delivered to N C. You will need to tell them the diameter of your PTO shaft.
