Folks, I hear a disconcerting "click" at the same turning interval on the left rear axel on my 230. Anyone replaced the outside axel bearing on a C/SC/200/230? How hard is it? I have the parts catalog and it appears that the wheel/tire comes off, cap off the axel a few spacers, etc, and the outside axel bearing. What's the deal?? Anyone know?? Thanks, BobG in VA

Not sure about on a 230 but on my '50 C I was able to remove the PTO housing and get into the rear-end that way. It is a tight fit getting your arm into the rear-end housing but is do able. An IH mechanic gave me a tip on this. Remove PTO housing. Jack up the side that you want to remove. Put a wrench on the bolt on the bull gear retaing cap and then spin the rear wheel while holding the wrench. There are two bolts and they are fine threaded. I did it the hard way. The bolts turned tooooo hard for fingers but too easy for a rachet. Used a box end wrench. It took a long time but was able to get it done.

Just a thought. Before you tear into it you should probably check that all the bolts holding the rim (with the tire on it) to the center (goes from the rim to the axle) are tight. Same goes for the wheel weights. Hope this helps. SAm in NS

I don't think you can get the bearing out without removing the axle, someone will correct me. Otherwise, remove the wheel, transmission cover, and slide bull gear off shaft. You can then remove the axle housing and shaft. Remove the axle cap, the rest is self explanatory. be sure to replace the axle seals, cap and housing gaskets along with the bearing. Be sure the inner bearing is ok.
