Thats right - Dental Floss fixes Farmalls -

Some where I heard or read about this, maybe it was even on this site at one time.

I am restoring a International I-A. The stem packing in the fuel shut off valve was worn to the point that it leaked fuel all the time in on position.

If you have looked before you know these packings are not replaceable. I looked everywhere imaginable with no luck, then I remembered this fix.

I bought a package of "Waxed Dental Floss". I rapped many rounds of this around the stem of the valve and then reinserted it. There was still some leaking but it was much improved. I took it back out and added more Dental Floss. This time the leak was stoped and has remained leak free for a week so far.

One tip - If you do this, when you are testing it don't do as I did and put several gallons of gas back in the tractor. If you have to add more Dental Floss you will have to drain all of that gas back out. One galon is enough to test it with.

GOOD LUCK

I think I saw that lever assembly at the Case dealership in Hasting, Mn for $9.99.

Looks like they updated the little guy. I almost bought one. I need to find out if it does fix the problem. The plug part looked alittle different.

Any body out there seen the same thing?

Scott

I used 2 o-rings. One a little smaller than the other so one would fit inside the other. Stopped it immediately. Not sure how long neoprene o-rings will last with gasoline.

My Dad used to use a condom for this purpose. Perhaps Mr. Green's parents should have let the fuel leak!

You can also use the floss to clean the bugs out of of your teeth when all those John Deeres pass you!!!!! !!!!! !!!!! !! or a nice little pair of thong undies, when they ride up it will remind you that you own a IHC..... Mr Green

Do all JD owners drive BMW's too. Just noticed a similar attitude there. :)

I usually go to the local pump dealer and get pump packing. It is much too big, but just peel one strand off and you have enough to go around the shut off valve and it doesn't take a hundred wraps.

That's nothin'. I used a toothbrush to clean a carburator bowl once! Seriously though, that's a good tip. I'll have to keep the floss in mind next time I run into that problem.

I use the mother in laws to clean the toilet bowl---seriously a tooth brush is a super good brush in the shop, as well as dental picks and mirrors.

I keep several old tooth brushes around the shop to scrub small parts with. Works great.

Dont you have some type of shutoff from the tank, that would allow you to put ever how much gas you want in the tank. The dental floss does work well.Also..... ...Stren High Visibilty works too!

Better than the string we used to use for similar use.
