Farmall F-20 magneto timing-

I played around with the timing on my F-20 for about a week now, On the flywheel I have an "O" then a line and the letter "E" stamped below it. This is the only mark I can find. If I setup the timing according to what the manual says, retarding the spark and then set the mag so the points are just opening, it comes out so the engine is firing before TDC when the spark is supposed to be retarded. I did make sure the #1 cylinder was on TDC and I made sure the mag was at terminal #1. Has anybody else seen this? So, can anyone that has an F-20 tell me this: with the mag retarded, do the points "just open" right at TDC or slightly after? The engine does run, but I still don't think the timing is where it should be.

One good thing you have it running. I have a F-20 and F-14 and worked on the timing a lot. When you get it to run you can move it a notch or 2 at a time each way until it is too far and then hit the middle and it will be right for your tractor. I think the timing, looking at the points is to get it started and then you fine tune it the way I said. It has worked for me and my F-20 will start on first pull after it is warmed up. The F-14 will not but I think it is the carberator because it floods too easy. It takes a little time but it works.

Also I can add be sure the slack is out of the timing gears before you line up the bolts on the mag coupler. Most important thing is until you get it set right, BE CAREFUL with that hand crank! Stay clear of the path it takes and don't stand over the thing and try to spin it fast. If everything is set right, it should start with a quarter turn and barely rolling over at that.

Thanks for the tip, I will try it again tomarrow, I have the timing close but not qite where it should be, I knew it would kick back if it was firing before TDC, but where it's at now, when the engine is warm it will start with just about 1/4 turn! Where I have it now, when the spark is retarded it's firing a few degrees after TDC. I still can't figure out why the mark on the flywheel doesn't line up, it comes closer to lining up when the mag retard lever is advanced... What does the E and O stand for?

well, all I can say is ive had 5 F-20s and 2 F-30s and none of them ever started on a 1/4 turn.. now maybe 4 quarter turns, as my CC Case generally does now, but never just one

Hi Bill, My 10-20 starts everytime on a 1/4 turn. Even when it is cold outside (15+ degrees). I do however pull the choke and roll the engine over 4 times with the mag off to charge the cylinders, But when I turn on the mag, 1/4 turn does it everytime. My F12 used to start like that , but it has been flooding from a worn needle valve in the carb. I have seen plenty of F-20s with hard starting problems, but it is usually a weak mag, or carb problem that causes them to be so cantakerous.I also noticed that when they did start, they sputtered a lot when running. Ever notice a lot of the tractors at shows how cruddy the fuel bowls look? Full of sediment, rust and old looking gas from the tractor sitting a lot. That might be part of the carb problems on some of them.

when you get all done the impulse should trip at or just past TDC. keep trying till you get it.
