1941 M,rebuilt the pump, good clean radiator, tight belt, coolant flowing good,no crud in the waterjacket, new thermostat right now,but does the same thing without one in it.Runs hot if ya get it under a load, but takes awhile.this is how it started. Was bushhogging last winter, about 35 degrees outside.I had only done about 3 acres and noticed the temp creeping up,had been at 160 once it warmed up good.(I think it was the factory thermostat, but could have been replaced at some point,I guess).Never did get over 180-190 after 8 hrs of steady running,so I didnt worry too much about it,my other M runs 180.Pulled it out about 6 later, weather had gotten warmer of course, guessing about 75 or so that morning, ran hot within an hour of running, but never really boiled over much,as soon as she got up hot, around 230-240 I knocked the pto out of gear and idled it down and worked my way to the house, only about 3 minute ride in 4th.By the time I got back,it had cooled down to 170-180.First thought was hung thermostat or clogged rad.Put in new thermostat and blew out rad good, checked belt tightness at that time too and it was fine.Had used my other M for the work so I didnt really use this one, just put it back togehter and put it in the barn. This past winter, she did fine only getting into the 180 range so I thought that solved my problems.Today,I pull it out and hook up my bushhog and go about an hour and shes hot as before,230-240.Got it home and was really ticked at the old gal so headed to dealer for parts.Got everything, new thermostat, gaskets, parts for pump, whole nine yards!Waterjacket was clean as a whistle,3 yr old rebulid on the engine.Water flows when the thermostat is open and I see no signs of bubbles in the coolant before or during flow.I also changed the cap while i was there. It runs about an hour while the temp slowly creeps up,then it gets to the 230 range again, but if I can run the thing at maybe half throttle all day and it only gets to 180.Im out of ideas!Any body got any clues. I tell ya,if Icould get this field knocked down as fast with my Cub,Id just about be tempted to sell it!Oh,mechanic pressure tested the system, said it was fine,no leaks anywhere.

Sounds like you may have a potential air locked area in the engine. Fill the system slowly and have the pipe plug out at the thermostat housing. Let the air bleed out completely. Some cooling systems, especially in cars are prone to this problem. Just a thought.

I have a 52 Super M and i'm having the same problem. I'm pulling 3-16's in third gear after about an hour it will boil out the top of radiator . New radiator, new thermostat, new cap, good head, i've even tried no thermostat.
My uncle is 85 years young and he told me he had the same problem about 20 to 30 years ago. He says that the anti-freeze we use now is to thick.
I have not tried running just water but i'm just about ready too. Good Luck .

If this only happens with the pto engaged to the brush hog, could there be a problem in the brush hog loading up the engine too much. Does the problem also occur under other heavy loads, like plowing?

I dont do any plowing with it,but itll get hot like pulling my trailer loaded with hay, running my square bailer, pulling the seed wagon loaded.Do all my plowing with a (gulp)4020 JD and an 806.I like ot keep all of my tractors working doing chores, saves me the trouble of unhooking attachments although here lately Ive been running the square balier from the 4020 and using the 806 for mostly plowing.I only farm 15 acres part time, but help a few buudies with their farms and they help me some too so it works good for all of us.Im not really in it for the money, cant make much off of 15 acres of hay!its just fun for me.

did you say you put tractor back together, did you put the schrould back on the rad. housing that direct the air over the engine, also timing is a big factor on heating engines up. I don't know if it can be done on M's or not but can you put fan blades on backwards where you are pushing air instead of pulling it to the engine. Don c

Let me ad some more to this.I tried the thermometer deal, read 235.Nearly scalded myself doing, but Im ok now.(That was last winter)If it were a cracked head or block, would I not see bubbles in the rad and would it have not leaked down on a pressure test?It doesnt "boil" over but I do loose some of the coolant when it gets hot enough, but not much, just enough to let me know its coming out of the overflow tube.I have gone through the whole system again this morning.I pulled the rad off and am going to have it cleaned again tomorrow, but in the mean time,I have a spare rad that I put on it that is questionable on the inside since it hasnt been on anything in a few years, but it was working good on this same tractor before I put on the new new two years ago.As soon as my lunch digest some and I get my nap Ill head back out there and fire it up and see what happens.Need to move some hay bails this afternoon with hte trailer so that should give it a workout enough to see what she'll do.oh i did double check my timing, dead on and I did adjust the carb to run a little richer.

An easy check to try is work the tractor till
it hot, Say 200 degrees. Run your hand over the front of the radiator from side to side top and bottom. You are checking for an even temperture
of radiator. Cooler areas indictate a radiator with crud in it. Good luck.

Does it lose coolant? If it doesn,t maybe your gauge is faulty and need to be replaced. Some gauges read higher than others. If it a ih gauge wont have numbers on it. The other guy's have good ideas also. Be careful removing cap when hot might boil over and burn you bad. Just a thought.

Check your ignition timing with a timing light and be sure it is not overadvanced or retarded.
#1 plug should fire between the double notches at higher RPM's.
An intake manifold air leak could lean the mixture and cause heating also.
Are you using the original IH thermostat or an after-market one? The IH one is near the $20 price range.

Check a few other things too. Too lean a fuel mixture can cause heating when under a load. There could also be something like a leaking head gasket or crack in one of the cylinders. The easy place to check is the fuel mix. After this, check the radiator for any plugging. If these steps don't find something, you need to start digging deeper.

Sounds like the radiator is plugged up inside. Last spring during field work our 966 started doing the same thing as you describe, could hardly make one round without it getting warm. Pulled out the radiator, took it to the radiator shop, and now all is well.

ONE SIMPLE TEST YOU MIGHT HAVE ALREADY DONE CHECK WATER TEMP AT THE RADIATOR WITH A THERMOMETER JUST A THOUGHT
