I noticed that my pto shaft seal is leaking. How much fluid do I need to drain in order to change it? Also what is the procedure to change is. Do I just remove the two bolts on the outer cap and drive the seal in?

Any help appreciated.

Bob

Make shure your rear PTO bearing is in good shape
no since in puting a seal in unless the bearing is good.If it is bad it will chew up the new seal.

If you have the correct level of oil in your transmission, you don't need to drain the transmission to change the PTO seal. Just park the tractor front end down on a fairly steep slope. Then remove the bolts that hold on the seal retainer, remove it and change the seal. I did my MD this way, and it did not leak any fluid at all.

Bob, Unless you want to mess with draining the rearend down and change lube, I'd just remove the two bolts holding the seal retainer and stick a heavy rag in around the shaft after removing the seal retainer. You will lose a small amount of lube depending on how fast you move. Slide the swinging drawbar to the side and sit a coffee can under to catch the drips/runs. Punch the old seal out from the outside toward the inside of the retainer. Use a piece of schedule 40 PVC of the correct diameter to insert the new seal into the retainer ensuring that the lip of the seal points inward toward the lube you want to hold back and coat the rubber lip of new seal with lube, slide it onto the pto shaft and get it up close to the mounting area, pull out the rag and push it into place. You may want to renew the gasket as you are doing the seal.//FB

Thanks Guys.

I figured that was the way to do it. In eastern Washington you don't have to look very far to find a steep hill to park on.
