Ive got a 460 gas finally got the transmission unstuck but its looks ugly in there after pulling one of the small drain plugs underneath I got a about a quart of water looks like some sludge snd figure maybe before I try to get this thing running we should clean out the tranny I thought about filling it with diesel fuel pulling out the spark plugs and have my wife tow me around the field in gear. Any ideas would be greatly apprecited thanks in advance

If you don't need it to run right away, and you are going to restore it, you really should pull the cover and look at the gears, and clean it out right -- you are going to find all sorts of crud, including small chunks of metal from the gears, hopefully no big chunks. A lot of work, but worth it (on my tractors anyway).

Mike - I doubt diesel will hurt the tranny seals - especially if the seals are exposed for only a few hours. However I'd recommend refilling the tranny with fresh gear oil as soon as it is finished draining - any traces of diesel still left on the seals will be immediately absorbed in the gear oil. And the fresh oil fill will help keep the seals from drying out…

Your plan sounds good, only I'd leave the spark plugs in. Instead simply block the clutch pedal down before you pull - so the motor doesn't spin and so the tranny is not under load. Then pull the tractor both forward and backward several times. Do this with the PTO engaged, and with the gear lever both in a forward gear and in reverse in order to get things inside the tranny as stirred up as possible.

Then immediately pull the drain plug and let it sit for a day or two, or until stuff stops dripping from the drain. You'll be amazed what'll come out!!

IVE HAVE USED A SMALL TRANSFER PUMP AND ABOUT 5 GALLONS OF DIESEL FUEL ,PUT ONE END OF A DOUBLE END HOSE IN BUCKET W/ FUEL IN IT PUT OTHER END IN TOP OF SHIFTER HOUSING AFTER REMOVING SHIFTER . CIRCULATE THE FUEL THRU TRANS. BACK INTO BUCKET .YOU COULD PUT AN OLD SCREEN WINDOW OVER BUCKET TO CATH ANY BIG STUFF ,THEN LET DRAIN OVER NITE ,FLUSH W/ SOME CHEAP WALMAT OIL ( 4-5 QUARTS ) ITS KIND OF LIKE A MOBILE PARTS WASHER , GOOD LUCK
